Seasonal Research Technician
New Jersey Audubon Society (NJAS)
is seeking qualified applicants for a part-time Seasonal
Research Technician position in the NJAS Research Department.
This is a three month position with the possibility of
continuation based on funding, and is based out of Scherman-Hoffman
Wildlife Sanctuary in Bernardsville, NJ. The Research
Technician will work for the Citizen Science program and is
responsible for office work, data entry, volunteer coordination,
and some field work.
Duties include:
* supervise citizen scientists involved in collecting data
* enter data
* maintain volunteer databases
* collect field data on avian abundance as needed
Qualifications:
* Completion of at least three years towards a B.S. in wildlife
biology, ecology, or related field
* Experience with basic computer programs, including Windows XP
and MS Excel
* Good organizational skills and attention to detail
* Good written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Experience identifying birds by sight and sound
* Ability to work unusual hours (early mornings)
* Must have own vehicle and valid driver’s license
Salary: $1000/month for part-time position (20 hours per week)

NJAS’ Research Department is currently
seeking to fill the following seasonal positions:
FIELD TECHNICIAN needed 1 April through 30 November
for research project on bird and bat migration at a large wind
power facility on the Tug Hill Plateau, a unique geological
formation located between the eastern shore of Lake Ontario and
the Northern Adirondack Mountains. The project employs dual
marine radar system and night vision equipment to monitor
spatial and temporal aspects of nocturnal bird/bat movements
during north and southbound migration.
Duties include:
- Setting up, monitoring and maintaining radar and computer
equipment,
- Archiving data for analysis
- Conducting optically enhanced nocturnal surveys of migration
flight dynamics.
Qualifications:
- Experience using basic computer programs like Windows XP, MS
Excel and data compression software required.
- Must be willing to work unusual hours (early morning or night)
- Must be able to lift heavy objects
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Background in bird identification and bird/bat migration
useful but not required.
- Must have a valid and clean driver’s license

SHOREBIRD FIELD TECHNICIANS (2) needed 16 April through
30 June for ongoing research on shorebird migration ecology
along New Jersey’s Delaware Bay shore. Delaware Bay is
recognizes as an internationally important staging area for
shorebirds during spring migration from South American wintering
grounds to arctic breeding sites.
Duties include:
- Extracting birds from mist-nets
- Banding, weighing and measuring birds
- Recording data
- Conducting point counts
- Surveying for color-banded birds
- Data entry
Qualifications:
- Mist-netting and bird banding experience necessary
- Ability to identify shorebirds of the eastern US
- Color-band resighting experience preferred
- Proficiency with MS Excel or Access programs preferred
- Must be able to work independently or as part of a team
- Must be willing to work long hours, six days/week
- Must be willing to work in occasionally hot and buggy
conditions

12-Month Environmental Educator
at New Jersey Audubon Society’s Weis Ecology Center
Responsibilities: Environmental educators report to
the Program Director and are primarily responsible for
conducting environmental education programs and interpretive
walks for students, scouts, day camp participants, families, and
adults. Environmental educators are also responsible for
planning and conducting activities for special events, leading
public programs and field trips, assisting in the care of our
snakes and raptors, writing press releases, contributing to the
Center’s calendar of events, office tasks, routine maintenance,
and additional duties as required by the Program Director and/or
Sanctuary Director. Environmental educators will be responsible
for completing one special project during the twelve-month
period. Opportunities exists for enthusiastic individuals to
develop curriculum and possibly research, write, and broadcast
radio programs.
Position Commitment: September 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008.
Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree or advanced
degree students. Interested applicants must be willing to work
and live in a residential/nature center setting and be willing
to work flexible hours on occasion. Teaching experience
preferred.
Total Package Value: $19,200
Remuneration: Private room on the property
(required), utilities, laundry facilities, 12 paid comp days,
and $800 per month through August 31st , paid on the 15th and
30th of each month.

Responsibilities: EE AssistantsInternship and co-op students
work under the supervision of the Senior Teacher-Naturalist at
the Lorrimer Nature Sanctuary in Franklin Lakes, NJ. Duties
include:
- Observe and conduct environmental education programs for
students, scouts, day campers, families, and adults.
- Actively promote Lorrimer’s programs through a variety of
means including NJAS magazine, website, community advertising,
and press releases.
- Observe and conduct environmental education programs for

- Interact with visitors to the center and gift shop.
- Assist with animal care.
- Design and maintain indoor and outdoor exhibits
- Carry out administrative duties, office tasks, and routine

Qualifications: NJAS seeks experienced self-motivated
individual with excellent organizational skills, the ability to
multi-task, and the ability to be effective with minimal
