BIRDS AND BIRDING AT CAPE MAY:
PROGRAM AND BOOK SIGNING
Mondays, July 7, 21, and August 4
10:30 a.m.
The husband and wife team of Clay and Pat Sutton are
longtime naturalists whose names are synonymous with Cape
May – a place that has been aptly called the migration
capitol of North America. Pat Sutton was the program
director for the New Jersey Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird
Observatory for twenty-one years. Prior to that, she was the
park naturalist at Cape May Point State Park. Clay is a
lifelong resident of Cape May, where he has worked as an
environmental program administrator, vice president of an
environmental consulting firm specializing in threatened and
endangered species, and for the past decade a freelance
naturalist and field biologist. Today, Clay and Pat are
writers, naturalists, lecturers, and tour leaders. Pat’s
consuming interests include owls, butterflies, and wildlife
gardening and wildscapes. Clay is captivated by migration in
all its forms. Their landmark 2006 book, Birds and Birding
at Cape May, is the in-depth result of their efforts over
many years documenting and protecting the migration and the
hometown that they so love. Their program will share the
history of birds and birding at Cape May. Expect a walk
through time as they share images taken over the past thirty
years, and even earlier during the days when hawks were
gunned down for sport. Limit 25.

the ocean its ups and downs and ins and outs. These two
weeks we’ll be putting these same powers to work and play,
as we experiment with motion in the ocean. August 4 to 14: Cape May Castaway These last weeks of summer will be a matter of survival as

educational training and guidance from teacher-naturalists
who mentor them. Daily assignments are flexible and take
place each day between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. A mandatory
intern training session is held every Friday from 10:00 a.m.
to noon. The internship also includes a community service
project, providing opportunities for participants to share
what they have learned and to make a lasting contribution to
the Nature Center of Cape May. Interested students should
contact B.J. Webersinn, 4-H agent, Rutgers Cooperative
Extension, 4 Moore Road, Cape May Court House, NJ, 08210.

Sanctuary Notes
Three hours a week is really not a
lot of time. Consider helping the nature center by
volunteering three hours a week. We can use your help,
whether it’s one day a week or one day a month. The Nature
Center of Cape May invites everyone who is willing to meet
new people, have a lot of fun, and help the organization
grow. Come join our volunteer team!
As a volunteer here at the Nature Center of Cape May,
you will have the opportunity to share your skills in
leading program participants to discover the wonders of the
natural world, assisting visitors in the education center,
maintaining and developing our facility, assisting with data
entry or sales in the Nature Store, and with many more
opportunities.
As New Jersey Audubon Society and the Nature Center
of Cape May continue to grow, we need the hard work and
dedication that you as a volunteer provide! Call us now, or
better yet, just stop in! See you soon.
