| One of my mantras in bird painting is: I never count
the feathers in the wings—I just count the wings. Had I not
employed this approach, faced with this concentration of
different birds, I would have had to adopt it for this
painting. How else to express the intersecting and
overlapping of the more than 400 species of birds that pass
this unique place in migration? Some go north and south in
the same plumages, some change for the return trip, others
only go north, still others only go south. In short, Cape May
is the birding hotspot of North America.
