The
perimeter of the SHBO building is landscaped with
shrubs, vines, perennials, and annuals for
attracting butterflies and birds. In its
first two years, the garden attracted 24 of the
46 species of butterflies that are on the Sandy
Hook butterfly
checklist. July to early October is the time
to visit.
If you are trying to create a butterfly garden
near the seashore, you will find our garden a
useful example of what plants
can tolerate the poor soil, salt spray, full sun,
and drying winds of this climate. (For
