Cats Indoors!

The New Jersey Audubon Society is partnering with the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) on the Cats Indoors! campaign.

Are you...

  • Tired of your neighbor’s cats killing birds and other wildlife on your property?
  • Concerned about the health and well-being of your outdoor cat?
  • Interested in learning how to turn your outdoor cat into a contented indoor pet?
  • Concerned about the impact of cats on wildlife in your local park or community?
  • Interested in getting local cat ordinances passed to address cat overpopulation?

...Then you’ve come to the right place.

Cats Indoors! The Campaign for Safer Birds and Cats, was initiated by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) to end the unnecessary suffering and death of birds and other wildlife caused by free-roaming domestic cats. Cats Indoors! seeks to educate cat owners, decision makers and the general public that free-roaming cats pose a significant risk to birds and other wildlife, suffer themselves, and pose a threat to human health.

Cats Indoors! encourages cat owners to keep their cats indoors and advocates laws, regulations, and policies to protect cats and birds, including the humane removal of free-roaming cats from areas important to wildlife. The campaign promotes grassroots efforts to address the issue at state and local levels.

Visit our Resources page to download educational materials developed for Cats Indoors!. These materials include the brochure, fact sheets, posters, camera-ready public service announcements (PSAs) for use in publications, and an educators' guide. Take the Pledge if you believe that all cats should be kept indoors, where they can be safe, happy and not a threat to wildlife.  If you are interested in registering as a Cats Indoors! supporter, click here.

Through the Cats Indoors! Campaign, NJAS and ABC encourage cat owners to keep their cats indoors, on a leash, or in outdoor enclosures or cat runs. To that end, we endorse C & D Pet Products' Cat Enclosure Kit. Click here for information on how to order this 6' X 6' X 6' play area and tell them you ordered through the Cats Indoors! Campaign. C & D Pet Products will donate 10% of your purchase to our campaign. Thank you!

The New Jersey Audubon Society, American Bird Conservancy and the Burlington County Feral Cat Initiative, sharing the goals of reducing feral cat populations and also protecting wildlife, are pleased to announce a collaborative effort on the Burlington Feral Cat Initiative Project in order to determine the best ways to reach our stated shared goals.  It is our sincere hope that this collaboration will result in a model for protecting wildlife while at the same time effectively reducing feral cat populations, and that this New Jersey model will further demonstrate that such collaborative efforts can and will work to achieve mutually beneficial ends.

Joint Statement Prepared by Dr. Gordon Stull (Burlington County Feral Cat Initiative), Linda Winter (American Bird Conservancy) and Eric Stiles (New Jersey Audubon Society)
