"The
New Jersey Audubon Society fosters environmental
awareness and a conservation ethic among New Jersey's citizens;
protects New Jersey's birds, mammals, other animals, and plants,
especially endangered and threatened species; and promotes
preservation of New Jersey's valuable natural habitats."
Welcome to the
World of Backyard (and other Shared) Habitats!

Each year,
15,000
additional acres of New Jersey are converted from either
agricultural or forest lands for other uses. A majority of
these become residential properties for humans and loose much of
their benefit to the birds, butterflies, and other wildlife that
have depended on them for millennia. While the our
Conservation Department is working constantly to help preserve
and improve larger tracts of land, NJAS encourages each
individual citizen and property owner, regardless of property
size, to provide for the stewardship of their property to help
preserve our diminishing plant and wildlife species.
For many years, the New Jersey Audubon
Society has promoted the development and maintenance of backyard
habitats. We are currently focusing our educational
efforts, not only on individual yards, but also on other
properties such as schoolyards and businesses where humans and
wildlife coexist. In these pages, we provide information
that has been gathered by naturalists, researchers, and backyard habitat enthusiasts.
We hope that you will find this information useful as you work to
create and maintain the property entrusted to you - both for your enjoyment and for the benefit
of wildlife.
