Scientific Observations, Artistic Interpretations - David Allen Sibley
Thursday, April 17, 7-8 pm

Using his beautifully detailed illustrations from the National Audubon Society field guide, The Sibley Guide to Birds, David Sibley explores why the connection between people and the natural world is more endangered today than ever before. He will also discuss how bird-watching can help people connect to the natural world, and how it can help us better understand today’s critical environmental
issues. Sibley will give insider’s perspective on how he has combined the acute power of observation with artistic interpretation to reveal the majesty of birds and all their variations.

Birds on the Wind: The Miracle of Migration - Kevin T. Karlson
Thursday, April 24, 7-8 pm

Kevin Karlson, who has spent more than 28 years photographing birds in their natural habitats—from the wilds of the Alaskan Arctic to the rainforests of South America, will show through his photographs how each year during migration birds perform amazing feats of physical endurance. Through these rare photographs of various species, he will demonstrate that nothing is more fascinating in the avian world than migratory movements of birds, from the 20,000-mile annual journeys of the Arctic terns to the 1,200-mile non-stop flights of Blackpoll warblers. Mr. Karlson recently co-authored the
innovative book The Shorebird Guide.

FIELD TRIP - Experience Birding
Saturday, May 17, 7 am to 5 pm
Fee: Newark Museum Members $30 ; non-members $35
Pre-registration required; call 973-596-6613.
Space is limited.

Guide: Patrick Scherer, Senior Naturalist at the New Jersey Audubon Society Lorrimer Sanctuary.
New Jersey hosts an amazing concentration of bird life throughout the year, especially during spring migration. Join naturalist Patrick Scherer for a daylong excursion of bird watching at two migration hotspots. First, visit Garrett Mountain in West Paterson to see songbirds such a warblers, thrushes and tanagers. In the afternoon, we will focus on ducks, raptors and shorebirds at the Hackensack Meadowlands. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring a bag lunch and binoculars. Bird
watching is the fastest growing outdoor pastime and for good reason!

(Rain or shine, meet at The Newark Museum: departure–7 am; return–5 pm. Binoculars can also be reserved at the time of pre-registration.)

Looking to attend both lectures and the field trip?  Sign up for the BIRDING PACKAGE!
