Migration in
New Jersey

By Brian Vernachio,
Don Freiday, and
Dale A. Rosselet
Throughout the world, migration watching, particularly bird
watching, is wildly popular. Bird watching is America's fastest
growing outdoor activity, with 71 million people spending $34
billion a year on the pastime. Butterflies and dragonflies, many
of which migrate, are beginning to receive similar attention
from nature lovers, as are amphibians, reptiles, and other
organisms.
This book is about understanding migration and understanding
the key roll New Jersey plays in the lives of many creatures
that migrate. The authors use real migration events from New
Jersey to illustrate particular aspects of migration, sharing
the science behind the phenomenon. They suggest how, where, and
when to observe migration, as well as how to participate in
conservation measures to ensure that migratory animals will
survive to be enjoyed by observers in years to come.
About the Authors
Brian Vernachio, Don Freiday and Dale Rosselet - all
of the New Jersey Audubon Society (NJAS) - are life-long New
Jersey residents and life-long students of migration. Both Brian
and Don are NJAS sanctuary directors overseeing close to 1,000
acres of preserved open space. Brian has traveled to over
eighteen states and three foreign countries in search of birds
and other migratory animals, but his favorite habitats remain
New Jersey's Pine Barrens and coastal marshes. Don has taught
wildlife ecology to college undergraduates and is author of many
essays on nature as well as a book, A Precious Place: A
Naturalist Explores New Jersey. Like Brian, he has studied birds
and wildlife throughout much of the U.S., as well as in Mexico
and Kenya, but most especially where he lives, in Hunterdon
County. Dale is NJAS's vice-president for education, and grew up
on the fringe of the Great Swamp in Chatham Township. Although
she has been fortunate enough to travel and lead nature tours
throughout the western hemisphere, Dale continues to marvel at
New Jersey's natural diversity.
