NJ Audubon Response to BP Oil Spill

A message to NJ Audubon Members and all concerned citizens of New Jersey regarding the BP Oil Spill

NJ Audubon is deeply concerned about the potential harm to wildlife and the environment as a result of this tragic accident, especially as the situation continues to escalate.

National Wildlife Federation, of which NJ Audubon is the NJ state affiliate organization, has developed an informative website regarding the spill.  Visit them at www.nwf.org.

Tri-state Bird Rescue and Research, who conducted the clean-up and bird rescue effort after the Athos spill in the Delaware River, has been called in to co-lead the efforts in the Gulf.  Learn more about their efforts at www.tristatebird.org

Volunteers are needed for an enormous variety of tasks associated with the clean-up; and many of those tasks do not involve strenuous activities.  Several organizations, including Tri-State and NWF, are coordinating volunteers and you can learn more about those opportunities at the websites above.  Please volunteer if you can, and spread the word.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has also compiled a great deal of information at www.noaa.gov.

Please note, NJ Audubon is a long-time opponent of off-shore drilling in the mid-Atlantic, due to the lack of knowledge about its effects on marine habitat and wildlife, and because of the potential for catastrophic events.

When you are a member of NJ Audubon, you are part of a movement that makes the health of the environment a priority.  We share your concern and hope you find this information helpful.
