A total of 30
volunteers conducted shorebird migration surveys three times
per month, from the middle of July until the end of October,
at 25 sites along costal New Jersey.
Data collected:
General information (time, date, tide level, weather,
location)
Numbers of individuals of each species
Disturbance
Numbers of adults and juveniles
Behavioral information
|

Sites surveyed supported different
combinations of large concentrations of species. As expected
more peeps, dowitchers, and dunlin were seen at mudflat and
marsh dominated sites like Bivalve and Great Bay Blvd.
Among sandy beach sites there were
differences in species use, For example Avalon was mostly used
by sanderlings and dunlin; North Brigantine by sanderlings,
peeps and plovers. Stone Harbor was used by the most diverse
group of species, sanderlings, peeps, plovers, dunlin, and
dowitchers.

Black-belied Plovers and Dunlin arrive later
in he season
Red Knot, peeps and dowitchers pass through
mostly by the middle of September
Sanderlings were seen throughout the season;
their number actually seem to peak again in October, most
likely because they are winter residents.
