Bunker Hill Natural Area, part of the Ten Mile Run Greenway
This part of the Ten Mile Run Greenway is located on roughly 214 acres off of Bunker Hill Road. This tract was recently added to the growing Franklin Township trail system. The 3.7 mile trail system connects the original Griggstown site to the west, and extends north to Middlebush Road. The area is a mix of grass and woodland habitats.
Unique Wildlife and Landscape Features
One of the most unique features of this site is the cliff along Ten Mile Run stream. The cliff dates to the geologic Passaic Formation of the lower Jurassic/early Triassic period and is composed of siltstone and shale. This site is also an excellent place for observing grassland and woodland birds and butterflies.
Passive Recreation Activities
Franklin Township mapped five trails at this site. These trails take visitors through open fields, scrub-shrub habitat, forested wetlands and mature upland forests. A trail map and rules and regulations of the Bunker Hill Natural Area may be downloaded as a PDF file by clicking here.
