March 21, 2010 - Hackensack Meadowlands
Jim Wright, Linda Matula, and Mike Britt co-led a NJ Audubon youth
birding trip to the Hackensack Meadowlands this morning...a gorgeous day
with some great kids made for a very enjoyable outing. We tallied 43
species for the day...highlights being BALD EAGLE (near adult) soaring
over the Hackensack River at Laurel Hill, COMMON RAVEN guarding the nest
and chasing off a Turkey Vulture, 5 GREAT CORMORANTS were roosting on
the old railroad bridge, at least 5 NORTHERN HARRIERS in the DeKorte
area with one gray ghost, plus 10 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS (two adults,
eight first-winters) and a BROWN CREEPER. RING-NECKED PHEASANT was
heard-only.
