Professional Development for Teachers

NJ Audubon provides a full service professional development program for all groups looking to increase their ability to integrate environment-based, systems learning into their existing curricula.   All professional learning programs reflect the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) standards for Excellence in Environmental Education and support state and national education standards with an emphasis on NJ's Student Learning Standards in Science.  

NJ Audubon is a founding member of ANJEE (the Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education) and holds a seat on the New Jersey Commission on Environmental Education (NJCEE).

 2018 Professional Learning and Summer Institutes

All workshops use the NJ Student Learning Standards as a foundation for teaching STEM (+Art). 

  • Teachers' School of Ecology (July 23-27, 2018) -  For Teachers of Grades 4 to 8
    Participants will explore the various ecosystems of the Passaic Watershed to learn how to integrate ecological concepts, skills and practices into their existing curricula.  Location:  Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary, Bernardsville, NJ. Sponsored by Ashland, Inc.  Register by March 15, 2018 (notification by April 1)

  • Honeywell Institute for Ecosystems Education (August 20-23, 2018) - For  NJ Teachers of Grades 6 to 12 in the Hackensack and Hudson River Watersheds
    This program combines classroom instruction with outdoor experiences that integrate ecology, environmental science and sustainability concepts.  Get practical hands-on learning in an urban setting that strengthens critical, analytical and creative thinking skills and empowers students to preserve the environment.
    Sponsored by Honeywell.  Register by April 1, 2018 (notification by April 13)

  • New Jersey Audubon on Call: Connecting Children to Nature and STEAM 2018 - For Afterschool Providers 
    This 4-month program will help increase afterschool practitioners teaching skills, content knowledge, and comfort level with teaching STEAM and using the outdoors for meaningful, place-based education. Sponsored by The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc., and the Tyler Foundation.
