New Jersey's Wildlife

A checklist of Mammals, Reptiles and Amphibians

State of New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection & Energy
Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife

The following pages list nearly 500 species of vertebrate wildlife that can be found in the Garden State. This is an exceptional number of species for a state as small as New Jersey. This incredible wildlife diversity is due in part to New Jersey's geographic position within North America. Our state lies at the southern edge of the range for many "northern" species and at the northern edge of the range of many "southern" species. New Jersey's geographic position and having hundreds of miles of coastline, five distinct physiographic regions and the Pine Barrens area combine to provide a splendid variety of habitats which support our diverse and abundant wildlife resource.

The DEP&E's Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife is committed to ensuring that our current wealth of wildlife remains to be enjoyed by all present and future New Jerseyans. This checklist is being made available to the public in the hope that it will aid our citizens in the appreciation and enjoyment of our wildlife resource.

The Division provides the public with wildlife viewing opportunities at Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) throughout the State. A guide to New Jersey's WMA's is available through the office listed below. Several WMA's provide exceptional opportunities. Higbee Beach WMA in Cape May County is one of the Nation's premier bird watching areas. The Pequest WMA in Oxford, N.J. features wildlife observation blinds and a myriad of educational programs. For more information about our WMA's and the Division's educational programs you can call (609) 292-9450 or write to:
