You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society's Cape May Bird Observatory. This message was prepared on
Wednesday January 14th. Highlights from the last week include ALLEN'S
HUMMINGBIRD, LONG-EARED OWL, SNOW BUNTING, PURPLE FINCH, YELLOW BREASTED
CHAT, COMMON MERGANSER, YELLOW BELLIED SAPSUCKER, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and
The young male ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD has continued in Cape May through at
least Jan. 7th, visiting feeders in front of 1321-B Ohio Ave. and sometimes
also at 1012 Cape May Ave. in Cape May. Watch from the street or the
sidewalk at either house. A late RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD that had been
visiting feeders along Bayshore Rd. was last seen on Jan. 3rd.
COMMON GOLDENEYE were reported on the 10th and the 11th. One at Two Mile
Landing on the Restaurant side and 220 off East Point in the Delaware Bay,
also seen there was a 1st winter LESSER BLACK BACKED GULL.
A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was seen on Jan.11TH at the Cape May Point State
Park. SNOW BUNTING are also being reported fairly regularly from the State
Park as well.
A LONG EARED OWL was seen at the Cape May Point State Park on January 10th,
along with AMERICAN WOODCOCK, SNOW BUNTINGS and PURPLE FINCH.
A WOOD DUCK was seen on Lily Lake on the 11th.
A 1st year BLACK HEADED GULL was sited on the 11th at the Pond at Champlain
& Bay Drive in the Villas
A female COMMON MERGANSER was reported seen off Champlain Avenue in the
Villas on January 12th.
The RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue to be seen at the Schellenger Tract of
the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge. This week a YELLOW BREASTED CHAT was
also reported there. Head west from Rt. 47 at Green Creek on Norbury's
Landing Rd. Go past the Green Creek Fire House and park on the roadside
where a grassy track heads back to the right. There are National Wildlife
Refuge boundary signs here. The woodpeckers were frequenting dead trees
near the end of this path.
An adult GOLDEN EAGLE was seen on January 7th at Corbin City WMA.
3 ROUGH LEGGED HAWKS (1dark 2 light) were reported at Motts Creek on the 11th.
North on the New Jersey coast, a BOHEMIAN WAXWING has been frequenting
Island Beach State Park and Barnegat Light has been loaded with interesting

A pelagic targeting winter seabirds is scheduled for Sunday, March 7 out of
Cape May, NJ. The cost is $90. Contact See Life Paulagics for more

Please note that the "free bridge" connecting Nummy Island to south Stone
Harbor is now closed until further notice at least until spring 2004 for
construction. Nummy can still be accessed from North Wildwood Blvd. drive
past the "road closed local traffic only" sign and over the bridge). Note
also that the deer hunting season is underway in New Jersey use caution in
areas where hunting is permitted!
