You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Societys Cape May Bird Observatory. This weeks message was
prepared on Sunday June 4. The roster this week includes sightings
of MISSISSIPPI KITE, ROSEATE TERN, WILSONS STORM PETREL, SANDHILL
CRANE, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and GULL-BILLED TERN.
There are still reports coming in of MISSISSIPPI KITE in the Cape May
area this week. On 5/27 one was seen from Cape May Point while on
5/31 and 6/1 two birds were seen in the vicinity of the Beanery and
along Sunset Blvd. On 5/30 three were seen heading in a northerly
direction over Beaver Dam which is just north of CMBOs Center for
Research and Education in Goshen.
GULL-BILLED TERN was reported from St. Peters jetty, in Cape May
Point, on 5/30. There was also report on 5/30 of at least one pair
at Beaver Dam where this species breeds.
A SANDHILL CRANE was spotted flying toward Cape May from Seashore Rd.
A ROSEATE TERN is still hanging around and was reported from the Cape
May Point State Park at Bunker Pond on 6/1.
On 6/2, 14 or more WILSONS STORM PETRELS were seen from the St.
Marys jetty area.
Also, at the Cape May Point State Park on the beach, a report of a
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL found on 6/3.
