You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society's Cape May Bird Observatory. This message was prepared
on Thursday, August 14, 2003. Highlights from the last week include
CORY'S SHEARWATER, LARK SPARROW, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, SANDWICH TERN,
AMERICAN AVOCET, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, CASPIAN TERN, STILT SANDPIPER,
and news of the songbird migration.
Fifty to sixty CORY'S SHEARWATERS were seen about 6 miles off Cape May
Point on August 9th, and then close to shore off the South Cape May
Meadows (The Nature Conservancy's Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge) on
A LARK SPARROW was reported from Cape May Point on Aug. 13, from the
corner of Alexander and Pearl.
A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was spotted at Stone Harbor Point on August 13th. A
SANDWICH TERN was seen here on Aug. 8th and 9th.
Sightings from the Brigantine Unit of the Forsythe National Wildlife
Refuge include 1 AMERICAN AVOCET, at least 20 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS,
and 1 CASPIAN TERN on August 12th. Three WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were
at the Higbee Impoundment on Aug. 13th, and 48 STILT SANDPIPERS were
counted here on Aug. 8th.
The pace of songbird migration continues to accelerate. Noteworthy
reports this week include at least 2 CERULEAN WARBLERS at the Higbee
Beach Wildlife Management Area from Aug. 8 to 12, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER
and WORM-EATING WARBLER at Higbee on the 14th, multiple WORM-EATING
WARBLERS, YELLOW WARBLERS, AMERICAN REDSTARTS, and NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSHES at Higbee on the 10th, a MOURNING WARBLER at Hidden Valley
on the 10th, and 4 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS at Higbee on the 8th.
