This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday January 6, 2011 with reports of PACIFIC LOON, EARED GREBE, BLACK GUILLEMOT, DOVEKIE, RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.
A BLACK GUILLEMOT was found at Sandy Hook Jan 11 off B-lot. Other hook birds this week included 2 REDHEADS in the scaup flock off F-lot, 3 COMMON EIDERS off B-lot Jan 10, 3 RED-NECKED GREBES off B/C lots, a COMMON MERGANSER in Spermaceti Cove Jan 10, 2 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES off B-lot Jan 8 and another kittiwake there Jan 10, a 3rd-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL at Plum Island Jan 7, and a RAZORBILL off C-lot Jan 11. A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL continues through Jan 10 at Seven President?s Park in Long Branch, most often seen in the pines adjacent to the entrance road opposite the Lighthouse Ice Cream stand. Also at Seven President?s were GLAUCOUS GULL, 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, an amazing flight of 200 RAZORBILLS, and 3 AMERICAN PIPITS Jan 9. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was noted in the dune thickets there Jan 8. Up to 3 RED CROSSBILLS continue this week in Deal, usually seen in black pines along Roosevelt Ave, Jerome Ave, Beringer Ave, and Deal Esplanade. RED-NECKED GREBE, an adult Black-headed Gull, 2 possible Black Guillemots, and several Razorbills were off Roosevelt Ave Jan 10. A second-cycle ICELAND GULL was there Jan 8. The drake EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was noted Jan 9-10 on the fourth pond in the Lake Takanasee chain. A first-cycle BLACK-HEADED GULL was noted at the main lake at Takanassee Jan 8. A PACIFIC LOON was photographed at Shark River Inlet Jan 10-11. The EARED GREBE continued this week through Jan 10 off Spring Lake near the three-story hotel and around Shark River Inlet through Jan 10. Several RED-NECKED GREBES were noted off Spring Lake, Shark River, and Avon this week. A RAZORBILL was noted off Spring Lake along with a DOVEKIE Jan 8. A COMMON EIDER and 2 RED-NECKED GREBES were noted at Manasquan Inlet Jan 8-10. The PACIFIC LOON was sighted there Jan 9.
Two REDHEADS were noted at the Oceanic Bridge in Middletown Jan 10. Four REDHEADS were detected in the scaup flock there Jan 12.
A CACKLING GOOSE and a ROSS?S GOOSE were among 800 SNOW GEESE in Upper Freehold Twp Jan 9. The flock was in a field at a Reed Sod Farm property on the south side of Rte 526 approximately one mile east of Allentown.
NJ Meadowlands reports Jan 8-9 included ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, COMMON RAVEN, 24 HORNED LARKS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, 18 SNOW BUNTINGS, and a COMMON REDPOLL along Valley Brook Drive.
The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continued this week at the Ridgewood Duck Pond Park in Bergen County.
Sussex County reports this week included 10 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at Wallkill River NWR?s Liberty Loop Jan 9. In the Delaware Water Gap NRA a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was noted near the Wallpack Inn and a NORTHERN SHRIKE was found along Kuhn Rd just south of Peter?s Valley (DeLorme P 18, J-9). A COMMON REDPOLL was found north of Van Campens Inn Jan 8. Four hundred HORNED LARKS, 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and 2-3 SNOW BUNTINGS were found in corn fields at the intersection of Gibbs Rd and Long Bridge Rd in Allamuchy Twp Jan 12.
Thirty COMMON REDPOLLS were tallied along Old Mine Rd between the Karamack Parking Area and the Poxono Island boat launch Jan 9. Also in Warren County were 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at Oberly Rd in Alpha Jan 10 and 1-3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS there Jan 7-12.
An ICELAND GULL and 40+ LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were noted at Spruce Run Reservoir Jan 11.
Two light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were found at ?the bridge to nowhere? at Stafford Ave, Manahawkin Jan 10. Another ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was noted at Brigantine NWR Jan 10.
A near-shore Pelagic Trip is scheduled for Saturday January 22, 2011 from Belmar NJ. This 8-hour trip will search for alcids including Razorbill, murres, Atlantic Puffin, plus Black-legged Kittiwake and other ?good? gulls. Cost is $115.
