This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday January 16, 2014 with reports of BARNACLE GOOSE, PACIFIC LOON, ROSS?S GOOSE, EURASIAN WIGEON, SNOWY OWL, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, seasonal/local reports of interest, and announcements.

A BARNACLE GOOSE was found near the Ramsey High School athletic fields Jan 13-15.

The PACIFIC LOON was seen again at Manasquan Inlet Jan 13. Another PACIFIC LOON was noted off Roosevelt Ave in Deal Jan 12. Other North Shore sightings this week included 6 REDHEADS at Gull Island Park in Point Pleasant Jan 13, another REDHEAD at Wreck Pond Jan 13, a drake EURASIAN WIGEON in Shark River estuary seen off Marconi Rd Jan 12, RED-NECKED GREBE and RAZORBILL at Manasquan Inlet Jan 10, and a GLAUCOUS GULL off Marine Place in Deal Jan 12.

Sussex County reports included 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and a SHORT-EARED OWL at Wallkill River NWR?s Liberty Loop Jan 13 and a GLAUCOUS GULL at the SCMUA Jan 14.

The Alpha Grasslands along Oberly Rd in Warren County hosted 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS Jan 13.

Bergen County birds this week included SHORT-EARED OWL and SNOWY OWL at the NJ Meadowlands (DeKorte Environment Center) and 3 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS at the Ridgewood Duck Pond. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was found at Overpeck Creek Park Jan 12-14.

Liberty State Park hosted SNOWY OWL and a COMMON RAVEN this week.

Hunterdon County birds this week included a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE in Clinton Twp near the intersection of Annandale and East Main St Jan 13. A SNOWY OWL was seen at Round Valley Reservoir Jan 13 and a GLAUCOUS GULL was noted at Spruce Run Reservoir Jan 14-15.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was found at the golf driving range at the Lyons VA Hospital Jan 13. Another GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen at Lord Stirling Park this week.

Five REDHEADS were found in a retention pond along Davidson Ave in Somerset Jan 15. In nearby Franklin Twp 6 SANDHILL CRANES continue in the fields around Randoph Rd and a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at Colonial Park.

A COMMON GALLINULE was out-of-season at Marciante-Jackson Millert Park in Elizabethport Jan 11. Also in Union County was a continuing RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at Rahway River Park Jan 12.

At least one RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at Oros Wildlife Preserve in Woodbridge Twp this week.

Two SNOWY OWLS were noted at Sandy Hook this week; also there was a fly-by flock of 6 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS Jan 13.

A SNOWY OWL was seen in Lawrence Twp Jan 10.

Ocean County sightings this week were of a female KING EIDER and a SNOWY OWL at Barnegat Light State Park Jan 11-13, another SNOWY OWL at Tuckerton Jan 11, and 2-3 SHORT-EARED OWLS at the east end of Stafford Ave in Manahawkin Jan 12-13.

Two SNOWY OWLS continue at Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR this week. Also there was a GOLDEN EAGLE Jan 12. At nearby Motts Creek Rd Jan 12 GOLDEN EAGLE, 2 light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, and 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS were noted. Also in Atlantic County was a KING EIDER on the oceanside at Longport and a GLAUCOUS GULL at North Brigantine Natural Area Jan 12; shorebirds noted around the south end of Brigantine Island/Abesecon Inlet Jan 13 included 5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 200 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 3 MARBLED GODWITS, and 70 ?Western? WILLETS.

Franklin Parker Preserve in Chatsworth hosted 42 TUNDRA SWANS, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 11 PINE WARBLERS, 4 PALM WARBLERS Jan 12. Also in Burlington County was a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE near the intersection of Union Mill Rd & Mt. Laurel Rd Jan 12.

A ROSS?S GOOSE was detected among a SNOW GOOSE flock one mile east of Woodstown along Rte 40 Jan 12. A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was found at the East Coast Sod Farm along Rte 40 the same day.
