This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Wed Jan 20 with reports of
Review List species including TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, BLACK-TAILED
GULL, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, and TUFTED DUCK, and other reports of
ICELAND and BLACK-HEADED GULLS, REDHEADS, SHORTEARED OWLS,
LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, local reports and the results of
the SW Morris annual midwinter count.
The Black-tailed Gull re-surfaced briefly in a cloud of gulls Jan
17 at 7:15 a.m. north of Manasquan Inlet between the first and
second jetty. It was not refound since.
The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen again at the Heislerville WMA
on East Point Road in Cumberland Co. Jan 16,17 and 18 about 1.1
miles beyond Main St.
A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was at Horseshoe Cove, Sandy Hook Jan
13-- park in the median lot beyond the maintenance area, walk
north to the maintenance road and turn left; walk down to the
bunker and look for it among the COMMON GOLDENEYE. The male
TUFTED DUCK resurfaced at Oceanic Bridge in Rumson, near Sandy
Also on the shore, a BLACK-HEADED GULL was at Sandy Hook Jan 17
in parking Area Bayberry; another was at Manasquan Inlet Jan 16
with an ICELAND GULL; two ICELANDS were there Jan 17. A dozen
REDHEADS were on the bayside of Long Beach island at 86th St.
Jan 16, and others were seen this week at Assunpink, Oceanic
Bridge, Lake Takanassee, and Wreck Pond.
SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen this week on Imlaystown Road at
Assunpink and at Manahawkin. The HORNED LARKS and SNOW BUNTINGS
continue in numbers at Oberly Road, Alpha, with three LONGSPURS
also there Jan 17. All three species were also seen at the Ort
Farm at the intersection of Rte. 24 and Bartley Road in Long
Valley. Six TUNDRA SWANS were on Wanaque Reservoir this week.
The SW Morris annual winter count had a record 91 species with
raven on Schooley's Mountain, numbers of HORNED LARKS and SNOW
BUNTINGS, a few LONGSPURS, PHOEBE, GREATER SCAUP, HORNED GREBE
and MERLIN, all rare on this count.
