Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 1/23/2001
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Tue Jan 23 with reports of Review List BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and BLACK BRANT; other reports of GR. WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, SANDHILL CRANE, SNOWY OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, LAPLAND LONGSPURS, seasonal reports and two reminders about the Cape May pelagic March 4 and the Liberty State Park hearing Jan 27 after the reports.

The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continues in Horseshoe Cove at Sandy Hook. Park at Area L. An ICELAND GULL was there Jan 18. A BLACK BRANT was discovered this week in the Moorestown goose flock with the now 3 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. All were at the corner of Centerton and Westfield roads.

Another GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE is at Warinanco Park in Linden off Park Av. Take Park Av west from Rtes 1 and 9 to get there. The SANDHILL CRANE continues in Veteran's Park, Hamilton at least as of Jan 21. Exit 195 at exit 3, Yardville, Hamilton Square Road. Go north to the light at Klockner Road. Go left on Klockner to the light at Hamilton Sq. Road. Go left again on Hamilton Square Road at the hospital. The park entrance is just ahead on the left after Bristol Meyers. The crane is apparently unfazed by sleds and people.

The SNOWY OWL at Holgate was seen again this week about one mile south of the parking lot sitting on a stick in the dunes. The Liberty State Park bird(s) were not reported but are probably in the area still. Remember the hearing Saturday Jan 27, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Liberty Science Center-support the habitat, oppose the water park. Written comments to Cari Wild, Ass't Commissioner, NJDEP, CN 404 Trenton, NJ 08625.

The HORNED LARKS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS continue at Allamuchy on Long Bridge Road on the manure strips. From 80, take 517 to the center of Allamuchy; take 612 north to 615 (Long Bridge Rd); turn left on Long Bridge and soon on the left, check the manure strip at the double silo: about 100 LARKS, 12 SNOW BUNTING and 3 LONGSPURS were there Jan 22. Proceed on Long Bridge Road to Quaker Church Rd and check those strips as well. A LONGSPUR is also at Oberly Rd, Alpha.

NORTHERN SHRIKE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and MERLIN were all seen at Spruce Run in the Clinton WMA from the parking lot on Charlestown Rd near 173-78.
