Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 1/24/1996
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Jan. 24 1996 with reports of DOVEKIE and other alcids, EIDERS, RED-NECKED GREBES, ICELAND and GLAUCOUS GULLS, EURASIAN WIGEON, REDHEAD, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, EVENING GROSBEAK, and seasonal and local reports.

A DOVEKIE was seen and photographed close to the wall at Barnegat Inlet January 21; the EIDER flock is still there, 30 COMMON EIDERS and a KING EIDER, and 15 HARLEQUINS.

Bogan's boat out of Brielle on Jan. 22 had 1 COMMON MURRE, two THICK-BILLED MURRE, 57 RAZORBILLS, and 15 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was at the east end of the Rte. 72 bridge, in a marina. At Sandy Hook Jan. 20, a RED-NECKED GREBE was at the area B Bayberry Beach jetty; a REDHEAD was with SCAUP at Spermacetti Cove; the HARLEQUIN was not seen at the auditorium. The EURASIAN WIGEON continues at Takanassee in the second pond (through the bridge).

Adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were on Lake Como and Wreck Pond Jan. 20. A first year ICELAND GULL and a first year GLAUCOUS GULL were at Manasquan Inlet Jan. 20 along with a RED-NECKED GREBE.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was at a feeder in Chatsworth Jan. 20 across from the municipal administration building, where there are red ribbons on the trees; also at the feeder, EVENING GROSBEAK and PINE SISKIN. A BALD EAGLE was reported Jan. 20 at Jackson Ave., Pompton Lake where the Pompton and Wanaque Rivers merge. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues in the SE corner of Verona Park in Verona, Essex County, off Bloomfield Ave.

Two NORTHERN SHRIKES are in Great Swamp on Pleasant Plains Road. Some 50 SHRIKES have been reported this winter in NJ. Another SHRIKE is at Assunpink on Eldridge Rd., halfway between the Headquarters and the dog trials building. Round Valley on Jan. 20 had 4 REDHEAD and an imm. BALD EAGLE. REDHEADS were also seen at the Hackensack Meadows Environmental Center in Lyndhurst, with CANVASBACKS, this week.
