This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Friday January 28, 2011 with reports of COMMON MURRE, THICK-BILLED MURRE, ROSS'S GOOSE, seasonal and local reports of interest.
The Jan 22 Belmar Pelagic tallied 12 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, AN ADULT ICELAND GULL, 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 33 COMMON MURRES, 3 THICK-BILLED MURRES, 225 RAZORBILLS, and 235 large alcids of undetermined species.
Up to 10 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and 2-3 RED CROSSBILLS continue this week through Jan 24 at Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch. The birds are often found in the pines on the north side of the main entrance opposite the Lighthouse Ice Cream stand. They have also been seen in the large stand of pines by the maintenance yard. Please DO NOT enter the maintenance yard-- you can view them better from the road outside of the yard.

The BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen again at the sewer outflow across from Houlihan's Restaurant along Rte 440 in Bayonne Jan 25.
NJ Meadowlands reports this week were of 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS along Valley Brook Rd Jan 22 and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK Jan 26.
Forty-four TUNDRA SWANS were noted at Stafford Forge WMA Jan 25.
Brigantine NWR sightings this week included light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, BARRED OWL, and SHORT-EARED OWL. Also in Atlantic County were EURASIAN WIGEON at the northernmost impoundment of the Corbin City unit of McNamara WMA Jan 20-26 and a SHORT-EARED OWL.
A light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen at Featherbed Lane near Sharptown and a ROSS'S GOOSE was gleaned from the SNOW GOOSE flock along Old Salem Rd off Rte 45 near Woodstown Jan 24.
Gloucester County reports were of 300 CANVASBACKS and 15 REDHEADS at National Park Jan 21 and 2 COMMON REDPOLLS near the intersection of Railroad Ave and Whig Lane Rd in Elk Twp Jan 20.
Eighteen REDHEADS were noted at Round Valley Reservoir Jan 24.
The Alpha grasslands along Oberly Rd this week hosted 2-5 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, COMMON RAVEN, 75+ HORNED LARKS, 2-3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and 14 SNOW BUNTINGS.
