Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 1/3/2001
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Wed Jan 3 with reports of Review List BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, ALLEN'S and RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS; and reports of SNOWY OWLS, SANDHILL CRANE, local reports and more Christmas Count totals.

A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen Dec 29 at Sandy Hook in Horseshoe Cove area where it's been other years; also there 5 REDHEADS. The ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD in Cape May was reported Dec 28 at the Wilson's feeder still; no more recent report.

Among the 97 species on the Moorestown CBC Dec 23 were RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, GREAT EGRET, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, PINE WARBLERS and PALM WARBLERS and HOUSE WREN. The Boonton CBC Dec 23 had 100 species. Hunterdon Dec 17 had 79, with a N. SHRIKE. Princeton Dec 17 had 83. The Trenton CBC, moved to Jan 1, had a SANDHILL CRANE in Hamilton.

Barnegat Dec 31 had 111 species including CHAT and LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and a high number of FOX SPARROWS. Long Branch, moved to Jan 1, had 107, with RED-NECKED GREBE, ROUGH-LEG and BROWN THRASHER. Other count totals when available.

SNOWY OWLS this week: one seen from the end of the Tuckerton Road across the water on the dunes Dec 28. Another has been present about a week at Liberty State Park, Jersey City, sometimes north of the Interpretive Center, sometimes elsewhere; also at Liberty, a flock of CANVASBACKS at the boat launch and a few TUNDRA SWANS in the river.

On the Delaware River at National Park, a GREAT CORMORANT was present Dec 29 and 125 TUNDRA SWANS were at Floodgates the same day.

A CHAT, a CATBIRD and a THRASHER are somehow wintering together at a Warren Twp. (Somerset Co.) home, still alive as of the millennium!

A RED-NECKED GREBE and two adult BLACK-HEADED GULLS were at Manasquan Inlet Dec 26.

Good counts of waterfowl inland at Merrill Creek Reservoir this week included 60 LONG-TAILED DUCKS (aka OLDSQUAW) Dec 26; and 75 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 16 REDHEADS and 125 COMMON GOLDENEYE Dec 27.
