Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 1/30/2014
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Tuesday January 28 with reports of BARNACLE GOOSE, SMITH'S LONGSPUR, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, EURASIAN WIGEON, seasonal and local reports of interest and announcements.

A BARNACLE GOOSE continues this week at the Ramsey High School fields through Jan 19.

A SMITH'S LONGSPUR was photographed at Stone Harbor Jan 26 and seen again Jan 30. See the CMBO "Birding from the Cape/Recent sightings" blog for details.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was noted at Overpeck Creek Park Jan 21.

Sightings from the NJ Meadowlands this week included SNOWY OWL, SHORT-EARED OWL along Disposal Rd, and LAPLAND LONGSPUR and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW along Valley Brook Ave Jan 22. Also in Bergen County this week were 3 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS at the Ridgewood Duck Pond Jan 21.

A SNOWY OWL was seen from LeFante Way in Bayonne Jan 27.

Three REDHEADS were found at Verona Park Jan 21.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE has been seen this week in fields around the Lyons VA Hospital through Jan 18.

Two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS (one dark-morph, one light-morph) were found along Pleasant Plains Rd in Great Swamp NWR Jan 23-26.

The 6 SANDHILL CRANES "checked in" this week in Franklin Twp, Somerset County Jan 28 along Canal Rd. At least 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue through Jan 24 at Colonial Park in Franklin Twp.

Round Valley Reservoir birds this week were of 8 GREATER SCAUP Jan 25, 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 3 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 2 RED-NECKED GREBES, GREAT CORMORANT, and GLAUCOUS GULL Jan 27.

Middlesex County sightings this week included a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at Sayreville Marsh off Major Dr Jan 26, ICELAND GULL at Buchanan Park and a first-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL at South Amboy boat ramp Jan 25; the Oros Wildlife Preserve hosted RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, MARSH WREN, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD Jan 26.

North Shore reports included a drake EURASIAN WIGEON at Shark River Estuary, seen off MacClearie Park through Jan 25, two RED-NECKED GREBES at Manasquan Inlet Jan 19-24, up to 4 ICELAND GULLS at Manasquan Inlet/Gull Island, and a GLAUCOUS GULL at Seven Presidents Park.

Barnegat Light State Park had a KING EIDER along with HARLEQUIN DUCKS Jan 26.

A SNOWY OWL was seen at Forsythe NWR (Brigantine) Jan 26 along with a Golden Eagle.
