Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 1/5/2006
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday January 5, 2006 with reports of BLACK GUILLEMOT, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, THAYER'S GULL, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, MARBLED GODWIT, RAZORBILL, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, seasonal and local reports of interest.

The BLACK GUILLEMOT appeared again at Barnegat Inlet, viewed from the parking lot just outside the entrance to the state park Jan 4. See the Barnegat CBC below for more birds at this site.

The female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was observed at Sandy Hook Dec 31 & Jan 4 in Horseshoe Cove. Other noteworthy sightings at the hook were up to 9 RAZORBILLS this week, seen in the ocean off fee lot, B-lot, and C-lot. In Spermaceti Cove up to 21 Redheads and a drake EURASIAN WIGEON were present Jan 1-2. A lone TREE SWALLOW was found at North Beach Jan 2. A first-winter GLAUCOUS GULL was noted at Conaskonk Point Jan 1 and an AMERICAN BITTERN was there Jan 4. Details about birding along Raritan Bay can be found at the NJAS website http://www.njaudubon.org Centers/SHBO

At Cross Farm Park in Holmdel a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE continues through Jan 2. The bird is with a large CANADA GOOSE flock that sometimes contains a CACKLING GOOSE as well. Look for the birds along Long Bridge & Willow Brook Rds (DeLorme P. 44 E-9).

The drake EURASIAN WIGEON remained at Little Silver Lake in Point Pleasant Beach this week through Jan 2. Two RAZORBILLS were off Manasquan Inlet Dec 30 and a first-year ICELAND GULL was off Spring Lake the same day. Other RAZORBILL sightings came from Pullman Ave in Elberon and Belmar. A probable "Nelson's Gull" (Glaucous X Herring Gull hybrid) was just south of Manasquan Inlet Dec 30.

Brigantine Island hosted 24 MARBLED GODWITS, 25+ "Western" WILLETS, and 100+ AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS Jan 2. At nearby Brigantine NWR, TUNDRA SWANS, 1-2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, and SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW were noted this week.

The Barnegat CBC tallied 118 species Jan 1 including 96 COMMON EIDERS, a female KING EIDER, and a BROWN PELICAN at Barnegat Light, 38 REDHEADS in Beach Haven West, 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS, LITTLE BLUE HERON, 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS, 13 TREE SWALLOWS, and SEDGE WREN.

The Long Branch CBC totaled 116 species Dec 31 including the aforementioned GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 30+ COMMON EIDERS, 2 HARLEQUIN DUCKS off Spring Lake, 3 ICELAND GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULL, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at the Monmouth County Landfill, FORSTER'S TERN, and 6 RAZORBILLS.

The Trenton Marshes CBC totaled 88 species (unofficial) Dec. 31 including THAYER'S GULL, ICELAND GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, & LESSER BLACK- BACKED GULL at Florence.

A possible hybrid BARROW'S X COMMON GOLDENEYE was observed in the Raritan River at Johnson Park Jan 2. Birders are encouraged to report this bird and submit photos or written documentation to the "New Jersey Birds" editor and VONJAS compiler.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was observed at the Great Swamp NWR Dec 30 near the Friends' house along Pleasant Plains Rd. Another RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at Garret Mountain near the horse stables on the upper road.

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was detected on Oberly Rd near Alpha this week.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was found at Swartswood Lake in Sussex County Jan 4, viewed from the main parking lot near the boat rental site.

An immature ICELAND GULL was noted on Oldham Pond in Haledon Jan 1.

A very late BLUE-HEADED VIREO was discovered at the Walker Ave wetlands in Pequannock, seen at the intersection of Walker and Wayne Avenues Dec 30.
