A gray GYRFALCON was seen flying and perched on the ground at Merrill Creek Jan 3. From the tower outlet parking lot (the main birding spot), the bird was seen on the spit on the left shore. Not seen since despite looking. Up to 160 COMMON GOLDENEYE and 16 REDHEADS continue there, especially p.m.
An EARED GREBE and 16 HARLEQUINS were at Barnegat Light jetty Jan 6. Other shore reports this week (mostly Jan 6 - 7) included 4 HARLEQUINS and a KING EIDER at Longport; LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SISKIN, SHORT-EARED OWL and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at Brig; both ROUGH-LEG phases at Manahawkin; GOLDEN EAGLE, SHORT-EARED OWL and GLAUCOUS GULL at Tuckerton; TUFTED DUCK (inaccessible) at Princeton Av in Brick (may move to Old Sam's, Silver Lake or Twilight Lake); female KING EIDER at Manasquan Inlet; REDHEAD at Takanassee; BARROW'S GOLDENEYE at Horseshoe Cove, Sandy Hook and also at the Hook, LAPLAND LONGSPUR in with HORNED LARKS in Lot K.
THAYER'S GULL and both WHITE-WINGED GULLS were at Florence this week. Two SNOWY OWLS were at Liberty State Park, Jersey City Jan 7; one was on the barge in front of Caven Pier earlier in the week. Birders take note of a hearing Sat Jan 27, 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. on the fate of the interior 240 acres of Liberty State Park west (left) of Freedom Way. Urge DEP to keep it wild and keep a commercial water park (an incompatible use) out of the State Park. If you can't come, write Cari Wild, Ass't Commissioner NJDEP, CN 404, Trenton, NJ 08625.
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER is at Great Swamp on Pleasant Plains Road at the heronry (usual place). ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS this week were at the dump on Garden State Pkwy mile 113; and at Little York on 614 in Hunterdon. Oberly Road in Alpha has had one to two LAPLAND LONGSPURS and HORNED LARKS this week.
Walnut Valley CBC Dec 16 had 82 spp., with AMERICAN BITTERN, NORTHERN SHRIKE, RAVEN and 300,000 BLACKBIRDS in the Great Meadows roost. Marmora Dec 31 had 86, with AMERICAN PIPIT, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and BALD EAGLE.
BALD EAGLES were reported this week in Crosswicks on Main St on the ground with vultures (!), and also in Kingwood Twp., Hunterdon County.
