Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 1/9/2014
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday January 9, 2014 with reports of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, PACIFIC LOON, KING EIDER, SNOWY OWL, RAZORBILL, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, seasonal/local reports of interest, and announcements.

A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found at Liberty State Park Jan 9.

The PACIFIC LOON was again at Manasquan Inlet off the north jetty Jan 5 & 8 along with a RED-NECKED GREBE. Other North Shore sightings this week included 4,000 BLACK SCOTERS, 500 SURF SCOTERS, 4 KING EIDERS, including an adult male, and a RED-NECKED GREBE off Monmouth Beach Jan 5; 2 REDHEADS at Shark River Estuary Jan 5; a first-cycle ICELAND GULL at Manasquan Inlet and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Deal Lake Jan 5, SNOWY OWL at 4th and Ocean in Belmar Jan 5, another SNOWY OWL in Ocean Grove Jan 5, and 1-3 RAZORBILLS off Monmouth Beach, Deal, and Shark River Inlet this week.

The green PAINTED BUNTING was last seen in Middletown Jan 5; no reports since despite searching.

The Sussex County MUA had ICELAND GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL Jan 7. A noteworthy total of 11 WILSONS' SNIPE was tallied in frigid weather at the Charles O. Hayford Hatchery (Sandbar Park) in Hackettstown, Warren County Jan 5.

A SNOWY OWL was seen briefly at Round Valley Reservoir's scuba area Jan 5. Three REDHEADS were seen at the reservoir Jan 3.

Four RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were noted at the Ridgefield Duck Pond Jan 8.

A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER were present at Mill Creek Marsh in Secaucus Jan 4. A SNOWY OWL was present this week in Bayonne at Ocean Terminal.

Eight RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were noted at Troy Meadows Jan 4.

Four RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were found at Lord Stirling Park Jan 4.

An aggregation of gulls near the pig farm on Homestead Rd, Hillsborough Twp Jan 5 included an adult GLAUCOUS GULL, 2nd cycle ICELAND GULL, and 6 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.

Six SANDHILL CRANES (returning for their 7th winter) continue around fields centered along Randolph Rd in Franklin Twp, Somerset County through Jan 5.

Union County reports this week were of a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE along the Rahway River near the corner of Union and Church Jan 4, and 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS at Rahway River Park Jan 4.

Sandy Hook sightings this week included 3 RED-NECKED GREBES, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 2 SNOWY OWLS, and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR among the 200+ SNOW BUNTING flock.

In Burlington County, Taylor's Refuge hosted 680 COMMON MERGANSERS, 15 GREAT CORMORANTS, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 2 WILSON'S SNIPES, and 16 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS Jan 5. At Palmyra Cove a COMMON RAVEN was seen Jan 2.

Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR continues to host 1-2 SNOWY OWLS this week, with one bird perching on the visitor center HQ!

Salem County reports this week included 65 TUNDRA SWANS at Mannington Marsh, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at Money Island Rd, and 4 SNOW BUNTINGS at East Coast Sod Farm Jan 5; a LAPLAND LONGSPUR and 6 AMERICAN PIPITS were found in the HORNED LARK flock at Featherbed Lane in Sharptown Jan 4 and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was noted along Burlington Rd between Rte 611 and Sand Bridge Rd southwest of Elmer Jan 4.
