This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 13, 2011 with reports of KING EIDER, EURASIAN WIGEON, SANDHILL CRANE, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, NELSON'S SPARROW, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest.
Sandy Hook reports this week included a drake KING EIDER off lots E and F Oct 8-10, an AMERICAN BITTERN at the salt pond Oct 9, two AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at the tidal cut, a PHILADELPHIA VIREO at Raccoon alley Oct 10, two ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS around the k-lot fields Oct 8, TENNESSEE WARBLER and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT Oct 7, and single CONNECTICUT WARBLERS at Gunnison Lot and the garden Oct 8. Sixteen species of sparrows were tallied at the hook this week including GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, LARK SPARROW and CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS around the k-lot/tennis court fields Oct 7-8, 5+ LINCOLN'S SPARROWS; and 5 NELSON'S SPARROWS, 4 SALTMARSH SPARROWS, and SEASIDE SPARROW at Plum Island. A DICKCISSEL was in the k-lot field Oct 8. Five PINE SISKINS were flyovers Oct 7. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for daily reports.
Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR Oct 9 hosted a drake EURASIAN WIGEON in the east pool, REDHEAD, AMERICAN BITTERN near the gull pond tower, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 4 CASPIAN TERNS, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD among the RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD flock along the east dike. Two HUDSONIAN GODWITS were along the north dike Oct 12. At nearby Brigantine Island 42 MARBLED GODWITS, 180 "Western" WILLETS, and 400+ BLACK SKIMMERS were noted Oct 9.
Two BROWN PELICANS were seen from the end of Great Bay Blvd in Tuckerton Oct 9.
Wheelabrator Refuge in Gloucester County Oct 8 had 4 CASPIAN TERNS, 8 TENNESSEE WARBLERS, 4 NASHVILLE WARBLERS, CAPE MAY WARBLER, AND RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
A VESPER SPARROW was noted at Cross Farm Park in Holmdel Oct 11.
Liberty State Park hosted 19 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO Oct 7; SWAINSON'S THRUSH, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, 15 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and 28 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were noted there Oct 10. At nearby Ocean Terminal in Bayonne a BARN OWL and 2 NELSON'S SPARROWS were noted Oct 7.
Two SANDHILL CRANES were flyovers in Maplewood, Essex County Oct 11.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and RUSTY BLACKBIRD were reported at Plainsboro Preserve Oct 10.
Four AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 40 AMERICAN PIPITS were noted on the sod fields at Herbert Rd near Assunpink WMA Oct 12
Somerset County reports included 7 CACKLING GEESE at a horse pasture along Opie Rd in Neshanic Station Oct 12, a NELSON'S SPARROW at Finderne Wetlands Oct 10 and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER were noted at Glenhurst Meadows in Warren Oct 8. A SHORT-EARED OWL was being mobbed by crows at Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary in Bernardsville Oct 7.
Roehrich's Roots in the Washington Valley section of Morris Twp had a PHILADELPHIA VIREO Oct 8 and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and CONNECTICUT WARBLER Oct 9.
The first NORTHERN GOSHAWK of the season -- a juvenile -- was tallied at Raccoon Ridge Oct 8.
