Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 10/16/1991
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 10:30 am, with reports of SWAINSON'S HAWK, SANDHILL CRANE, RAVEN, WESTERN KINGBIRD, DICKCISSEL, and seasonal and local reports of interest. A SWAINSON'S HAWK was seen from the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park, Oct. 12 and 13. There were good PEREGRINE flights Oct. 13 and 14 there, and over 20 species of warbler at Higbee Oct. 13. Several BALD EAGLES and DICKCISSELS were also reported from the hawk watch. A SANDHILL CRANE was reported flying south over Sandy Hook at 11 am Oct. 13, and a WESTERN KINGBIRD was there the same day. On Oct. 15 at Sandy Hook the same or another WESTERN KINGBIRD was at the boardwalk at Spermaceti Cove opposite the visitor's center. A good flight at Sandy Hook that day, Oct. 15, brought good numbers of KINGLETS, WHITETHROATS, PHOEBES, and HERMIT THRUSHES, and smaller numbers of WINTER WRENS, WATER PIPIT, SHARP-TAILED SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were reported this week from Hillsboro and from Sandy Hook. BLACK VULTURE, BALD EAGLE, and GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH were reported recently from Chimney Rock hawk watch in Somerset Cty. A BALD EAGLE was over Basking Ridge Oct. 13. Five WILD TURKEYS were on Woodland Rd., Mt. Freedom, in Morris Cty. There was a good GANNET flight off Long Beach Island on Oct. 11. On Sat. Oct. 12, 2 or 3 RAVENS were seen both on Sunrise Mountain and on Raccoon Ridge hawk watches; and RAVENS were also seen on Sunrise Mountain Oct. 14 and 15. A DICKCISSEL was in Hatfield Swamp Oct. 14. Some 60 RING-NECKED DUCKS were on Wolf Lake, Sussex Cty, 0ct. 11. GOLDEN PLOVERS were on Stow Neck Rd. in Salem Cty., with hundreds of other shorebirds. At Helms Cove, Carney's Point, on the Delaware River, there were 30 Caspian Terns on Oct. 11. The Voice of NJ Audubon [(908) 766-2661] is a regular weekly report on birding in New Jersey.
