This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday October 16, 2013 with reports of NORTHERN WHEATEAR, LITTLE GULL, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, LARK SPARROW, and seasonal/local reports of interest.

A NORTHERN WHEATEAR was found along Great Bay Blvd (WMA) Oct 12; no reports since. WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, AMERICAN BITTERN, 2 TRICOLORED HERONS, and 2 NELSON'S SPARROWS were noted there Oct 13.

A LARK SPARROW was detected at Manahawkin WMA Oct 13. Rare inland, 2 BLACK SKIMMERS were observed in the Ocean County portion of Whitesbog Oct 13.

Six SANDHILL CRANES and a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE were noted at the Sunset Rd causeway at Mannington Marsh in Salem County Oct 12.

Palmyra Cove Nature Park Oct 12 had a first-cycle LITTLE GULL (first county record), 84 FORSTER'S TERNS, 12 species of warblers, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.

Fisherman's Cove Park in Manasquan had SORA, 11 NELSON'S SPARROWS, SALTMARSH SPARROW, and SEASIDE SPARROW Oct 12. Also in Monmouth County at Dorbrook Park Oct 14 were SORA, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, and DICKCISSEL, all seen in the fields on the south side of Rte 537.

Oros Wildlife Preserve (aka Woodbridge River Watch) in Middlesex County had 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS this week, seen in the northwest corner of the park.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER were noted at Linden's Hawk Rise Sanctuary Oct 14. More information about this preserve can be found at: http://www.njaudubon.org/SectionHawkRiseSanctuary/Introduction.aspx

An AMERICAN AVOCET was discovered at the Clay Ave Wetlands in Lyndhurst Oct 16.

A hybrid AMERICAN WIGEON X EURASIAN WIGEON was seen on the pond at Hudson County Park Bayonne Oct 16.

A VESPER SPARROW was found at Six Mile Run Preserve in Franklin Twp Oct 13.

Sightings from Finderne Wetlands in Bridgewater Oct 12 included AMERICAN BITTERN, 60+ PALM WARBLERS, 2 VESPER SPARROWS, 200+ SAVANNAH SPARROWS, and 12 BOBOLINKS. A site guide to Finderne Wetlands can be viewed here:http://ebird.org/content/nj/news/finderne-wetlands-birding/

Glenhurst Meadows continues to host at least one RED-HEADED WOODPECKER through Oct 13; three RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were there the same day.

A juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was in Lord Stirling Park Oct 12.

Troy Meadows had a juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD Oct 12.

Bee Meadow Park in Whippany had 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS Oct 14.

The Florham Park fields hosted 2 VESPER SPARROWS Oct 13-14.

A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was detected at Clinton WMA Oct 12.

Sussex County reports this week included up to 30 AMERICAN PIPITS at the Culvers Lake causeway along with 5 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS Oct 14 and at Kittatinny Valley State Park SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 10 AMERICAN PIPITS, and 3-4 VESPER SPARROWS were found Oct 12.
