Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 10/17/2001
This is the voice of NJ Audubon for Wednesday October 17 at noon with reports of review list species HENSLOW'S SPARROW, plus LARK SPARROWS, NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, SEDGE WREN, COMMON RAVEN, and other seasonal reports of interest.

Sandy Hook on October 16 had a HENSLOW'S SPARROW on Plum Island near a small salt pond at the back or west side of the Island. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was in the K lot field the same day. Another HENSLOW'S SPARROW was present at the Hook on October 12 in the field west of the Gunnison Beach lot. A LARK SPARROW was present at the Sandy Hook, north of the North Beach Pavilion October 10 to 12 but apparently not since. Other birds at Sandy Hook this week included NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW on Plum Island, AMERICAN BITTERNS at Plum Island, Spermacetti Cove, and North Pond, and LINCOLN'S and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS.

A SEDGE WREN was at Warren Green Acres October 13, to the right of the parking lot. Also there this week have been up to 11 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, PINE SISKIN, PURPLE FINCH, and numerous seasonal migrants including RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, AMERICAN PIPITS, KINGLETS, PALM WARBLERS, etc.

Four COMMON RAVENS, apparently migrating, were at Long Pond Iron Works State Park on Beach Road along the West Milford-Ringwood Border on October 16, and 2 GREAT EGRETS are lingering there.

Merrill Creek this week had PINE SISKIN and PURPLE FINCH around the Visitor Center, as well as adult and immature Bald Eagles.

New Jersey Audubon's Scherman-Hoffman Sanctuaries in Bernardsville October 16 had 2 Pine Siskins and White-crowned Sparrow at the feeders, plus seasonal migrants around the Hoffman Building including Blue-headed Vireo, both Kinglets, and Black-throated Blue and Palm Warblers.
