This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 18, 2012 with reports of AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, SANDHILL CRANE, GOLDEN EAGLE, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, seasonal and local reports of interest.

A SWAINSON'S HAWK was reported from the Pole Farm (Mercer County Park Northwest) Oct 14. Also in Mercer County this week was a continuing late BLACK TERN at Mercer County Park through Oct 12 and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Sayen Gardens.
Sightings from Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR this week was highlighted by an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN Oct 14-15; also there Oct 13 were AMERICAN BITTERN, 72 PIED-BILLED GREBES, 8 MARBLED GODWITS, and 6 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
Two AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and a VESPER SPARROW were noted at the Johnson Sod Farm in Salem County Oct 15.
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was photographed at Barnegat Inlet (State Park) Oct 15.
Sandy Hook reports this week included an excellent passerine flight Oct 13 including 25 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, 6 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, 125 EASTERN PHOEBES, 30 BROWN CREEPERS, 10 WINTER WRENS, 600 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 500 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 2,000 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, 1,200 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 9 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, 14 PURPLE FINCHES, and 252 PINE SISKINS. Also there that day were SORA, a fly-by AMERICAN AVOCET at Plum Island, and 3 PIPING PLOVERS. Other birds noted at the hook this week were ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER Oct 12 and DICKCISSEL Oct 11. An immature BLUE GROSBEAK continues near K-lot through Oct 14.
A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH and CONNECTICUT WARBLER were detected at the Bear Swamp Natural Area off Maxim Rd in Howell Twp Oct 12.
Finderne Wetlands in Bridgewater Twp had a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW Oct 14-15; the bird was found on the west side of the property below the Van Veghten House. Also there this week were NELSON'S SPARROW Oct 15 and a VESPER SPARROW Oct 11. A detailed site guide to Finderne Wetlands can be read on the NJ Audubon eBird Portal:
Duke Farms Oct 12 had 4 VESPER SPARROWS in the community garden at the orientation center; also there that day were 5 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 6 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, 13 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and 51 PINE SISKINS.
Birds reported at Glenhurst Meadows in Warren Oct 13 included 8 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 22 AMERICAN PIPITS, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, VESPER SPARROW, 3 LINCOLN'S
SPARROWS, 12 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, 140 PURPLE FINCHES, and 95 PINE SISKINS.
Single GOLDEN EAGLES were noted at Chimney Rock Hawk Watch Oct 13 & 14.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was over the old heron rookery off Pleasant Plains Road in Great Swamp NWR Oct 14.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was noted at Black River WMA Oct 18.
A SANDHILL CRANE was found off Cold Brook Road southeast of Oldwick Oct 12. Other Hunterdon County reports this week included an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at Spruce Run Reservoir Oct 11 and Cold Brook Preserve in Tewksbury hosted 63 AMERICAN PIPITS, TENNESSEE WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, 6 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and DICKCISSEL.
Raccoon Ridge Hawk Watch tallied 4 GOLDEN EAGLES and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK Oct 12; two GOLDEN EAGLES and another NORTHERN GOSHAWK were recorded Oct 13. A detailed site guide to hawk watching there can be read on the NJ Audubon eBird Portal:
Sussex County reports this week included a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK over Sunrise Mountain Oct 11 and Kittatinny Valley State Park Oct 13 hosted YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 20 AMERICAN PIPITS, NASHVILLE WARBLER, VESPER SPARROW, and 15 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
Liberty State Park hosted 36 PALM WARBLERS, 4 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 32 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and 30 PINE SISKINS Oct 14; twenty AMERICAN PIPITS were tallied there Oct 13.
