This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Thursday Oct. 2 with reports of
GODWITS and other shorebirds, WESTERN KINGBIRD, LARK SPARROW, HAWK
reports, and seasonal and local reports of interest.
Shorebirds at Brig this week included 20 species on Sep. 28, with
1 WILSON'S PHALAROPE, 2 MARBLED GODWITS, 4 AMERICAN GOLDEN
PLOVER, 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, 30 STILT SANDPIPER, and on
Sep. 25, 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS.
In Cape May, the 197 PEREGRINES on Sep. 28 was close to the record
of 206. Up to 4 MARBLED GODWITS were on the intracoastal waterway
Sep. 27 between Wildwood and Stone Harbor, seen from boats.
A LARK SPARROW was at Stone Harbor Point in the path near the
parking lot Sep. 27. PARASITIC JAEGERS were seen from the pelagic
boat trip out of Cape May Sep. 26, and one from shore Sep. 28. Some
160 BROWN PELICANS passed Cape May Point Sep. 25 heading north and
smaller numbers were seen in Cape May Sep. 26-28. A WESTERN KINGBIRD
was on New England Road Sep. 24.
Sandy Hook Sep. 27 had 18 WARBLERS, 5 VIREOS including
PHILADELPHIA, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, WINTER WREN, LINCOLN'S
and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and SAPSUCKER. A WESTERN KINGBIRD was
at Overpeck Sep. 30 from 7 to 11 a.m.
In Tewksbury this week, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WINTER WREN and
DICKCISSEL were seen. The SILVER GULL of last year, origin
unknown, has returned to Riverside Park in Pennsville, Salem
Montclair Hawk Lookout reported 1700 SHARPSHINS as of Sep. 22, and
all the lookouts are reporting numbers of sharpies better than
recent years. Chimney Rock reported GOLDEN EAGLE this week along
with PEREGRINES and BALD EAGLES. SNOW GEESE were reported this
week at Brig and over Chimney Rock.
