This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday October 20, 2005 with reports of RUFOUS/ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD,
GOLDEN EAGLE, AMERICAN AVOCET, RED PHALAROPE, SEDGE WREN, seasonal
and local reports of interest.
The immature RUFOUS/ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD in Verga, Gloucester County
continues through at least Oct 19. The homeowner is willing to have
birders visitplease be considerate and discreet when parking and
viewing the bird. From Rte 295 south take exit 23. At the top of
the ramp, turn right onto Hessian. Make the next right onto Pedan in
about 1/10 of a mile, then the next right onto Brewer. The house is
the second on the right, with a white picket fence (address is 1076
Brewer Ave). Walk up the driveway to the backyard. The feeder is
hanging from the roof of the porch. Also check the flowers in the
yard for the bird (DeLorme P. 54, F-5).
A RED PHALAROPE was a great find at Spruce Run Reservoir Oct 14no
reports since. Also in Hunterdon County at Cold Brook Preserve Oct
16 were 2 COMMON RAVENS, 2 VESPER SPARROWS, 85+ SAVANNAH SPARROWS, 18
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, DICKCISSEL, PINE SISKIN, and 15 PURPLE
FINCHES. A SEDGE WREN was a good find at Cold Brook Oct 20.
Raccoon Ridge hawkwatching results this weekend included 6 GOLDEN
EAGLES, 17 BALD EAGLES, 57 AMERICAN KESTRELS, and 45 MERLINS among
912 raptors tallied Oct 15-16.
The Allendale Celery Farm this week had the continuing COMMON
MOORHEN, 2 AMERICAN PIPITS, NASHVILLE WARBLER, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS,
2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, PINE SISKIN, and 10 PURPLE FINCHES.
Birds noted at Liberty State Park Oct 15-17 included WHITE-WINGED
SCOTER, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, BARN OWL, 22 AMERICAN PIPITS, BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, 300 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 2 VESPER SPARROWS, LINCOLN'S
SPARROW, 12 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and 5 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS. An
AMERICAN BITTERN and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW were noted on Oct 20.
Two different SEDGE WRENS were detected at Sandy Hook Oct 18-19. One
was found by the old tennis courts between the Garden and K-lot Oct
18 and the second was present Oct 19 in the weedy field south of
Gunnison Rd between the Howard Marine Labs and Gunnison parking lot.
Sandy Hook had several excellent flights this week with 6 WHITE-
WINGED SCOTERS, large numbers of accipiters and falcons, 2 BALD
EAGLES, PIPING PLOVER and WESTERN SANDPIPER near the end of the
Fisherman's Trail Oct 15, 30+ YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, a late
PHILADELPHIA VIREO behind the Howard Lab Oct 16, TENNESSEE WARBLER in
the Bowl, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER north of the lighthouse Oct 18. Cape
May Warbler, HOODED WARBLER near K-lot Oct 18, CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS
near the entrance to Gunnison Beach and another near K-lot, 4 VESPER
SPARROWS, NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS at Plum Island and the K-lot
field, 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 50+ WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, DICKCISSELS
at K-lot Oct 15 & 18, 2-4 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, 10-20 PURPLE FINCHES
daily and PINE SISKINS Oct 17-18. A free, detailed birding map of

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was found at Baldwin Lake in Mercer
County Oct 20, accessed from Kunkel Park on King George Rd in
Six-Mile Run hosted large numbers of sparrows Oct 19 including 3
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
Great Bay Blvd near Tuckerton hosted 3 BROWN PELICANS, 2 AMERICAN
AVOCETS, 4 CASPIAN TERNS, and 3 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS Oct
15. Most of the birds were found at near the end of the road or in
the bay offshore.
Barnegat Light State Park Oct 15 had a good movement of several
hundred BLACK SCOTERS and SURF SCOTERS, 24 BROWN PELICANS, 20+
NORTHERN GANNETS, 92 ROYAL TERNS, and CASPIAN TERN.
Brigantine NWR Oct 15 continued to host the AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN,
CATTLE EGRET, CASPIAN TERN, numbers of LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and a
LAPLAND LONGSPUR along the east dike.
