This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 20, 2011 with reports of WHITE-FACED IBIS, RED-NECKED GREBE, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, BARN OWL, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest.
A basic-plumaged WHITE-FACED IBIS was photographed at Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR Oct 17. Other birds found at Brig this week included AMERICAN BITTERN, 3 AMERICAN AVOCETS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, NELSON'S SPARROW, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.
Mudflats at nearby Brigantine Island hosted 62 MARBLED GODWITS, 183 "Western" WILLETS, 2 late "Eastern" WILLETS, a HUDSONIAN GODWIT, and 175 BLACK SKIMMERS Oct 15 & 19.
Sandy Hook reports Oct 15-17 included a juvenile AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at the tidal cut, a Sora at the east end of K-lot, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, AMERICAN PIPIT at the puddle in K-lot, 1-2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, CAPE MAY WARBLER at the garden; CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW --all in the k-lot/tennis court fields area, 2 NELSON'S SPARROWS at Plum Island, BLUE GROSBEAK at the tennis court field, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and 3 flyover DICKCISSELS. Sightings from Cold Brook Preserve in Tewksbury Oct 14-15 were of ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, NELSON'S SPARROW, and BLUE GROSBEAK. A VESPER SPARROW and 2 DICKCISSELS were found there Oct 18.
A VESPER SPARROW was noted at the Fenske Visitor Center at Great Swamp NWR Oct 14-20. Eight RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were off White Bridge Rd Oct 20.
Hatfield Swamp in Essex County hosted a BARRED OWL and 25 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS Oct 17.
Hudson County reports included a HORNED GREBE at Liberty State Park Oct 15 and a VESPER SPARROW at Rutkowski Park in Bayonne the same day. A BARN OWL was hunting near Ocean Terminal in Bayonne on the evening of Oct 16.
Allendale Celery Farm birds Oct 20 included AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, and BOBOLINK.
In Warren County, a RED-NECKED GREBE was noted on Merrill Creek Reservoir Oct 18 and 3 GOLDEN EAGLES were tallied at Raccoon Ridge Oct 16.
