This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 21, 2010 with reports of WHITE-TAILED KITE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, EVENING GROSBEAK, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.
A WHITE-TAILED KITE was reported Oct 21 in the Forsythe NWR impoundment along Bayshore Drive in Barnegat Township. Note this is NOT the same as Barnegat Light and is on the west side of the bay. Specifically, the bird was sitting on an island with cedar trees and visible from Bayshore Drive opposite the public beach. From the public beach parking lot look west into the impoundment. Any further reports are appreciated.
Highlights at Raccoon Ridge this week included GOLDEN EAGLE and 19 BALD EAGLES Oct 15, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK Oct 17, and 10 EVENING GROSBEAKS Oct 18.
A light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen over the Kittatinny Ridge in Stokes State Forest Oct 18.
Merrill Creek Reservoir/Scott's Mountain Hawk Watch this week had 9 BLACK SCOTERS, 9 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 120 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, and a SHORT-EARED OWL Oct 19. Four HORNED GREBES, 3 GOLDEN EAGLES, LINCOLN'S SPARROW and FOX SPARROW were noted Oct 20.
Montclair Hawk Lookout had a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK Oct 16 and a GOLDEN EAGLE Oct 19.
Overpeck Park in Bergen County Oct 20 had a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, 2 VESPER SPARROWS, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW on the stable side on the old landfill.
Liberty State Park hosted VESPER SPARROW, 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and 9 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS Oct 20.
Birds found at Glenhurst Meadows in Warren Twp Oct 17-18 included RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, 2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, a VESPER SPARROW in the parking lot, 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and 10 PURPLE FINCHES. A DICKCISSEL was noted there Oct 14.
Hunterdon County reports this week included a BLUE GROSBEAK at Cold Brook Preserve Oct 17; SURF SCOTER and RED-THROATED LOON at Spruce Run Reservoir Oct 14-15. At Hoffman Park a CACKLING GOOSE, 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 10 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and PINE SISKIN were noted Oct 18.
Sandy Hook sightings this week included a late EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE Oct 18, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at the south end of K-lot through Oct 16, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR at the end of the fisherman's trail and 11 PINE SISKINS Oct 18. Birds found Oct 20 included all three SCOTERS off C-lot, 2 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS, AMERICAN PIPIT, NASHVILLE WARBLER, 2 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and 20 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. Two AMERICAN AVOCETS were found in the Barnegat impoundments of Forsythe NWR in Barnegat Twp Oct 14.
Migrants at Wheelabrator Refuge in Gloucester County Oct 20 included 2 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, VESPER SPARROW, and 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS.
Floodgates on the Delaware River had 10+ FORSTER'S TERNS, 3 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, 3 AMERICAN PIPITS, 3 PURPLE FINCHES, and PINE SISKIN Oct 17.
