Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 10/23/1996
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wed., Oct. 23 with reports of BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, EURASIAN WIGEON, AVOCET, MARBLED and HUDSONIAN GODWITS, POMARINE JAEGER, DICKCISSEL, LARK SPARROW, VESPER and GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, and local reports.

An imm. BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER was present at Higbee Beach Oct. 20, 21 in cedars down the path from the butterfly garden to the tower platform. Also in the Cape May area this week: COMMON EIDER at the Point; a few DICKCISSEL were around; and POMARINE JAEGER and RED-THROATED LOON were seen at the Avalon Seawatch.

At Brig(Forsythe) NWR, an AVOCET was seen Oct. 22; 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS on Oct. 21; and EURASIAN WIGEON in the East Pool Oct. 22. Some 30 MARBLED GODWITS were seen Oct. 19 through 22 at Absecon Inlet from the bridge to Brigantine Island, same spot as last year.

At Overpeck Park, two different LARK SPARROWS have been seen off and on at the entrance to the gravel road on the left for about two weeks. One of them is banded, and has been present from Oct. 17 through 22 daily. Also at Overpeck, VESPER SPARROWS were present this week; on Monday, one bird was near the rock pile. A VESPER SPARROW was also seen in a field behind Taylor's Rental off Rte. 38 in Moorestown.

In Monmouth County, A DICKCISSEL was seen Oct. 21-22 in the Garden at Dorbrook Park in Colt's Neck; also there on Oct. 22, a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW. On Oct. 17 at Sandy Hook, DICKCISSEL, CLAY- COLORED and GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were all seen in the weedy field at Area K, North Beach.

At Weequahic Park lake in Newark, there were 13 RUDDY DUCKS, a GADWALL, 9 PIED-BILLED GREBES and 9 AMERICAN COOT on Oct. 17. In Bridgewater, a BALD EAGLE was seen overhead on Oct. 16, and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK harassing Starlings on Oct. 21 between Rtes. 287 and 22.
