Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 10/23/2008
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday October 23, 2008 with reports of EURASIAN WIGEON, MARBLED GODWIT, EVENING GROSBEAK, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements. Most locations in this report can be found in Bill Boyle's "A Bird Finding Guide to New Jersey" available at New Jersey Audubon Society Bookstores.

Sandy Hook sightings this week included 6 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS off B- lot, a GREAT CORMORANT off North Beach, a late PIPING PLOVER at the end of the Fisherman's trail, 2 continuing COMMON MOORHENS at North Pond through Oct 23, 6 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS over the scout camp Oct 17, a SHORT-EARED OWL in the dunes near north pond Oct 18, an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at the north end Oct 18, NASHVILLE WARBLER, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at the north end of Raccoon Alley Oct 18, single NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS at k-lot and on the bayside of C-lot, 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, DICKCISSEL, and 8+ Pine Siskins. A flyover Snow Bunting was at north beach Oct 23. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for daily reports.

Brigantine NWR reports Oct 18-19 were of AMERICAN BITTERN, TRICOLORED HERON, 3 MARBLED GODWITS, 2 CASPIAN TERNS, and SHORT-EARED OWL. Oct 22 sightings included a drake EURASIAN WIGEON and 7 MARBLED GODWITS in the west pool, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and 2 SNOW BUNTINGS along the South Dike.

At the north end of Picatinny Arsenal 100+ PINE SISKINS and 4 EVENING GROSBEAKS were detected Oct 21. This is the Lake Denmark section, which is open to the public along the old railroad bed which runs along the east side of the lake (DeLorme P. 25 I&J 15-16). Sightings from the Montclair Hawkwatch Oct 21 included a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK and 29 PURPLE FINCHES. On Oct 20 a total of 401 PINE SISKINS were tallied.

A VESPER SPARROW was detected at Overpeck Creek in Leonia Oct 17.

Birds noted at Laurel Hill in the NJ Meadowlands Oct 22 included 37 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 2 COMMON RAVENS, and 13 AMERICAN PIPITS.

A congregation of sparrows at the restoration area behind the Liberty State Park interpretive center Oct 17 included 1-2 VESPER SPARROWS, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and 80 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS.

Garret Mountain reports Oct 17 included 250 flyover BRANT, 5 BLUE- HEADED VIREOS, 14 PALM WARBLERS, VESPER SPARROW, 12 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and 14 PINE SISKINS.

Allendale Celery Farm reports this week included FOX SPARROW, 75 PINE SISKINS, and 6 PURPLE FINCHES Oct 20.

At Raccoon Ridge 2 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS highlighted the flight there Oct 17 and two more Goshawks were tallied Oct 22. Also there this week were 2 SNOW BUNTINGS and 200 PINE SISKINS.
