This is the voice of NJ Audubon for Wednesday October 24 at 5:00 p.m.
with reports of review list species TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE and HENSLOW'S
SPARROW, plus AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, PARASITIC JAEGER, BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER, SEDGE WREN, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, LARK SPARROWS, CLAY-COLORED,
and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, DICKCISSEL, PINE SISKIN, and other seasonal
reports of interest.
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was reported on the Kittatiny Ridge in Stokes
State Forest Monday October 22. No further details were available at
tape time; this sighting has historical precedent.
HENSLOW'S SPARROW and SEDGE WREN were at Warren Green Acres on October
20. The HENSLOW'S was behind the back pond in the weedy brush not far
from the Passaic River. The SEDGE WREN was to the right of the
parking lot and a few hundred yards back. Other birds at Warren Green
Acres included LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and PINE
SISKIN. Reach Warren Green Acres from I-78 exit 36, proceeding south
from the exit to the first left onto Mountainview Road and less than
one mile to a small parking area on the left (north) side of the
road, just past a dairy farm.
Sandy Hook October 20-21 had the following birds: LARK SPARROW at
I-lot, near the North Beach pavilion; ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW near the Gunnison Parking Area, behind the Marine
Consortium; another ORANGE-CROWNED near E-lot; VESPER and GRASSHOPPER
SPARROWS near K-lot; and AMERICAN BITTERN and SORA at North Pond.
Island Beach October 21 had a good movement of COMMON LOONS, GANNETS,
and thousands of SURF and BLACK SCOTERS. Also at Island Beach that
day were AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 3 PARASITIC JAEGERS, LONG-TAILED
DUCK, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, and PINE SISKIN.
An immature BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was at the east side of Culver Lake
October 18, and 20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported near Culver's
the same day.
Birds at the Cold Brook Preserve near Oldwick this week included a
DICKCISSEL consorting with House Sparrows in the hedgerow at the top
of the hill west of the parking area, plus VESPER, GRASSHOPPER, TREE SPARROWS,
and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and WINTER WREN. Reach
Cold Brook from Interstate 78 via exit 24, proceed north on County
Route 523, which turns into Route 517. Pass through the town of
Oldwick and look for the parking area just outside town on the left.
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue at Great Swamp near the heron Rookery
on Pleasant Plains Road, and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was near the
parking lot there October 23.
PINE SISKIN and PURPLE FINCH have been regular at the feeders at
Scherman-Hoffman Sanctuaries in Bernardsville.
