Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 10/26/2006
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 26, 2006 with reports of LE CONTE'S SPARROW, SEDGE WREN, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest.

A LE CONTE'S SPARROW was observed again at Sandy Hook in the field south of Gunnison Rd between the Howard Marine Labs and Gunnison Parking Lot (G-lot) Oct 22. Also there that day was a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW. Sixteen species of sparrows were observed Oct 22 at the hook including 2 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, 2 VESPER SPARROWS, NELSON'S SHARP- TAILED SPARROW, and 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS. Two VESPER SPARROWS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, and 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were around K-lot Oct 26. A first-fall BLUE GROSBEAK continued this week around the fields at K- lot. A first-year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and 30+ ROYAL TERNS were noted at Spermaceti Cove Oct 22. Up to 4 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were found at Spermaceti Cove Oct 20-21. An immature YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was discovered in Salem County Oct 23 along County Home Rd near Sharptown (DeLorme P. 61, E-21). A CACKLING GOOSE was observed at Mannington Marsh the same day. A ROUGH- LEGGED HAWK and 4 BALD EAGLES were noted at Money Island Rd Oct 20.

Palmyra had an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER Oct 23. Also in Burlington County at Rancocas State Park Oct 25 were Cape May Warbler, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS.

Cold Brook Preserve in Tewksbury hosted 30+ AMERICAN PIPITS, NASHVILLE WARBLER, 3 VESPER SPARROWS, many WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS Oct 21; a female DICKCISSEL Oct 21-23 by the new pond, and a FOX SPARROW Oct 23. Also in Hunterdon County this week was an AMERICAN BITTERN at Assicong Marsh; a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and 100+ AMERICAN PIPITS at a recently harvested soybean field in the county.

Birds found at Liberty State Park this week included up to 3 VESPER SPARROWS in the back field, a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW along Freedom Way, and 25+ WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS Oct 21.

A SEDGE WREN was detected at Garret Mountain Oct 24 at the north end of Barbour's Pond. Also at Garret this week were VESPER SPARROW at the dump Oct 22, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and FOX SPARROW.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was noted Oct 24 at the Ridgewood Duck Pond. The bird has apparently been present for some time. The pond is located on the north side of East Ridgewood Ave between Paramus Rd and Pershing Ave.

Allendale Celery Farm reports this week included AMERICAN WOODCOCK, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, flyover AMERICAN PIPITS, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and 3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.

Raccoon Ridge highlights this week included 40 BRANT, 13 BALD EAGLES, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 9 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 6 GOLDEN EAGLES, 23 MERLINS, 3 COMMON RAVENS, and AMERICAN PIPITS.
