This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 27, 2011 with reports of SWAINSON'S HAWK, PURPLE GALLINULE, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, SPOTTED TOWHEE, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, SEDGE WREN, seasonal and local reports of interest.
Reports from Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR Oct 24 were of a SWAINSON'S HAWK over the upland section of the wildlife drive, VIRGINIA RAIL in the northwest pool, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, AMERICAN AVOCET, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, 5 MARBLED GODWITS, 14 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, a late STILT SANDPIPER (most of the shorebirds were in the east pool), and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. A COMMON GALLINULE was at the gull pond Oct 22 and an AMERICAN BITTERN was also noted that day. At nearby Brigantine Island 60 MARBLED GODWITS, a juvenile HUDSONIAN GODWIT, 50 "Western" WILLETS, and 50 BLACK SKIMMERS were tallied Oct 23.
A juvenile PURPLE GALLINULE discovered Oct 20 along Lefante Way adjacent to the Bayonne Golf Club was seen again near the first green bridge Oct 22; no reports since. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen feeding on the mudflats there Oct 25-26, and a late STILT SANDPIPER was there Oct 22. A BARN OWL was hunting over Ocean Terminal Oct 23. Also in Hudson County was a "one-day-wonder" SPOTTED TOWHEE at Liberty State Park Oct 22, viewed along the interpretive center trail with no further reports. Other birds noted at Liberty State Park Oct 23 were BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 3 WINTER WRENS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, NELSON'S SPARROW, 5 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and x
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was photographed at Taylor's Refuge in Cinnaminson in Burlington County Oct 26. The bird was feeding on juniper berries next to the tiny parking lot opposite the large yellow house.
Sandy Hook sightings this week included a subadult male KING EIDER off battery Kingman Oct 24, 3 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and a COMMON EIDER off E-lot through Oct 26, CATTLE EGRET around K-lot Oct 21-22, two AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at the tidal cut, a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK over K-lot Oct 24-25, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at the end of the fisherman's trail, a Nighthawk sp (probably COMMON NIGHTHAWK) at north pond Oct 21 & 23, two COMMON RAVENS over battery Potter Oct 23, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO at the Garden Oct 26, three AMERICAN PIPITS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER near at the tennis court field Oct 23, single LARK SPARROWS at the south edge of Gunnison Lot Oct 24 and along the fence near the fisherman's trail Oct 25, single Vesper Sparrows at Plum Island and K-lot Oct 24, LINCOLN'S SPARROW at the garden, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW near Battery Mills Oct 23, up to 6 Nelson's Sparrows at plum island and Spermaceti Cove, and a male Blue Grosbeak through Oct 24 at the tennis court field. A SEDGE WREN was detected at Thompson Park in Lincroft Oct 20. The bird was in the hedgerow on the north side of the road to Marlu Lake.
A CACKLING GOOSE was at Lake Etra Oct 26.
Great Bay Blvd WMA Oct 21 hosted AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 2 TRICOLORED HERONS, and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW.
Riverwinds Nature Trail in Gloucester County had LINCOLN'S SPARROW and DICKCISSEL Oct 22.
Up to 3 CACKLING GEESE were seen through Oct 22 in the CANADA GOOSE flock at Duke Island Park in Bridgewater.
Glenhurst Meadows Oct 23 had 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, VESPER SPARROW, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.
A NELSON'S SPARROW was seen again at Finderne Wetlands in Manville Oct 22, and a VESPER SPARROW was reported there Oct 24.
A GOLDEN EAGLE passed Chimney Rock Hawk Watch Oct 25.
A VESPER SPARROW and 25+ PALM WARBLERS were noted at The Tourne in Boonton Oct 20. Cold Brook Preserve in Tewksbury had 2 DICKCISSELS Oct 21.
A RED-NECKED GREBE continued through Oct 24 at Merrill Creek Reservoir. Also in Warren County at Raccoon Ridge were 2 GOLDEN EAGLES and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK Oct 25.
The Allendale Celery Farm had AMERICAN PIPIT and RUSTY BLACKBIRD Oct 24.
