This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 28, 2010 with reports of NORTHERN GOSHAWK, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.

Raccoon Ridge raptors this week included a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK and GOLDEN EAGLE Oct 22, and 2 GOLDEN EAGLES were seen Oct 23.

Kittatinny Valley State Park had a GOLDEN EAGLE overhead, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 10 AMERICAN PIPITS, and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS Oct 25. A flock of 23 AMERICAN PIPITS were in the newly tilled field near Twin Lakes Oct 26. Five VESPER SPARROWS were noted at the quarry area along Kinney Rd in Mount Olive the same day.

A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was detected at Laurel Hill Park in Secaucus Oct 23.

Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary in Bernardsville had good hawk flights Oct 23-24 including an adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK and GOLDEN EAGLE Oct 23 and a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK Oct 24. Also there over the weekend were 2 COMMON RAVENS, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 40 PINE SISKINS, and 20 PURPLE FINCHES.

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen over Wildcat Ridge Oct 24.

Three possible BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were seen near the bridge on Pleasant Plains Rd in Great Swamp NWR Oct 24. Also there were that day were VESPER SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and 2 FOX SPARROWS.


Reports from Merrill Creek Reservoir/Scott's Mountain Hawk Watch this week included 2 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS Oct 25 & 26, and single GOLDEN EAGLES Oct 23 & 24.

Hunterdon County reports this week were of 12 BLACK SCOTERS and a RED-THROATED LOON at Spruce Run Reservoir Oct 23 and a phenomenal 15 VESPER SPARROWS were found near the boat launch Oct 23; a VESPER SPARROW at Hoffman Park in Holland Twp Oct 25 and at Cold Brook Preserve in Tewksbury 30 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and 7 VESPER SPARROWS were noted Oct 27.

Sandy Hook sightings Oct 23 included a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK over G-lot, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER at the end of the fisherman's trail and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW near the lighthouse; Oct 24 brought 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS to north beach, a flyover DICKCISSEL was at K-lot, and up to 3 NELSON'S SPARROWS at Plum Island. A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was noted at North Beach Oct 25. A SORA was on Plum Island Oct 27. Other Monmouth county reports were of a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE among CANADA GEESE on Lake Etra off Rte 571 south of Hightstown Oct 23 and 5 COMMON EIDERS off Roosevelt Ave in Deal Oct 28.

The Barnegat Impoundments of Forsythe NWR (located in Barnegat Twp, Ocean County) hosted 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS Oct 22-23. Also in Ocean County was a HUDSONIAN GODWIT at the Stafford Ave impoundments at Manahawkin WMA Oct 26-27.

A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was found along the dikes at Brigantine NWR Oct 21.

At the south end of Brigantine Island 36 MARBLED GODWITS and 108 WESTERN WILLETS were tallied Oct 24.
