Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 10/31/2002
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 31, 2002 with reports of RED-NECKED GREBE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, HUDSONIAN and MARBLED GODWITS, PARASITIC JAEGER, SHORT-EARED OWL, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, CLAY-COLORED and VESPER SPARROWS, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, seasonal and local reports of interest.

Culvers Lake in Sussex County hosted a RED-NECKED GREBE, 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, and five WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS Oct 26. Eight BLACK SCOTERS were on Lake Musconetcong Oct 27.

The Raccoon Ridge hawk flight Oct 27 included one NORTHERN GOSHAWK, four GOLDEN EAGLES, 240 RED-TAILS, and 13 RAVENS. Scotts Mountain Hawkwatch had GOSHAWK and GOLDEN EAGLE the same day. Nearby Merrill Creek had PINE SISKIN and SNOW BUNTING.

A flock of over 500 AMERICAN PIPITS were in the sod fields on Gibbs Road in Allamuchy Township Oct 26 (DeLorme P. 23, L-23).

Two adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were found at the Sussex County Landfill on Rt 94 in Lafayette along with 60 BLACK VULTURES Oct 29.

Hunterdon County locales had good numbers of short-distance migrants. Tower Hill Park in Norton, Oct 28 had a flight of typical October migrants including 75 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, LINCOLNS and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. Birds found at Solberg Airport Oct 27 included one VESPER and five LINCOLNS SPARROWS, and 50 AMERICAN PIPITS (DeLorme P. 36, E-2).

Two immature BALD EAGLES were seen killing and eating a CORMORANT on Lake Parsippany Oct 29.

Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were found at Sandy Hook near the garden Oct 27. An Empidonax flycatcher, possibly a very late LEAST FLYCATCHER, was found south of Gunnison Road near the marine labs the same day. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was noted in the field adjacent to the K-lot Oct 30-31. Other species noted this week were LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, HORNED LARK, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and SNOW BUNTING. Large numbers of NORTHERN GANNET, HERMIT THRUSH, WINTER WREN, and DARK-EYED JUNCOS were present at the hook this week.

Island Beach State Park had three returning HARLEQUIN DUCKS at Barnegat Inlet, two MARBLED GODWITS, PARASITIC JAEGER, and AMERICAN PIPITS Oct 27.

Birds reported at Brigantine NWR this week included one to two HUDSONIAN and one MARBLED GODWIT Oct 25-27, both in the southeast corner of the east pool; other shorebirds included LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, one PECTORAL SANDPIPER, two STILT SANDPIPERS and four WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. Also there this week were two late CASPIAN TERNS by the gull pond tower, several calling VIRGINIA RAILS at the end of the north dike, two SHORT-EARED OWLS Oct 26, an IPSWICH SPARROW, and two LAPLAND LONGSPURS along the south dike Oct 29
