This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 4, 2012 with reports of BLACK-CAPPED PETREL, SAY'S PHOEBE, NELSON'S SPARROW, seasonal and local reports of interest.

A BLACK-CAPPED PETREL was photographed by a birder on a fishing trip ca. 75 miles off Wildwood Sep 28. Also seen on that trip were PARASITIC JAEGER, LONG-TAILED JAEGER, and numbers of CORY'S SHEARWATERS and GREAT SHEARWATERS.

A SAY'S PHOEBE was found at Sandy Hook Sep 27 at K-lot. It was a "one-day-wonder." Other birds noted this week at Sandy Hook were 2-3 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, and 8 BLACK TERNS at the tidal cut/false hook area, 87 ROYAL TERNS at Spermaceti Cove, and a good passerine flight Sep 29-Oct 1 highlighted by 33 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 6 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, 18+ species of warblers including ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, and 2 WILSON'S WARBLERS, NELSON'S SPARROW, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 2 DICKCISSELS, 27 PINE SISKINS, and 16 INDIGO BUNTINGS. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was found near G-lot Oct 2.

Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR Sep 29 had 37 PIED-BILLED GREBES, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 25+ SORAS, COMMON MOORHEN, 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS in the channel opposite the dog-leg, BLACK TERN, and 3 CASPIAN TERNS. A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was at Brig Oct 3.

An AMERICAN AVOCET was found at the Barnegat impoundments off Bay Ave in Barnegat Twp Sep 29.

Fifty BROWN PELICANS were noted at Island Beach State Park Sep 28.

Two CONNECTICUT WARBLERS were found at Wheelabrator in Westville, Gloucester County Sep 30.

Four SANDHILL CRANES were noted along Rte 539 near New Egypt Oct 1.

Glenhurst Meadows hosted 4-5 CONNECTICUT WARBLERS and 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS Sep 29. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was noted there Sep 30.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found at Duke Farms through Oct 1. The bird frequents the community garden at the western-most parking area of the orientation center on Duke Parkway West.

Liberty State Park Sep 30 had GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, LARK SPARROW and LINCOLN'S SPARROW; an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was there Oct 1.

Kittatinny Valley State Park hosted PHILADELPHIA VIREO, AMERICAN PIPIT, 13 species of warblers, and 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS Sep 30.

A juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK was noted hunting around Sunrise Mountain Sep 29.
