Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 10/6/1999
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wed OCT 6 with reports of MARBLED GODWIT, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, DICKCISSEL, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WARBLER flights, seasonal arrivals and local reports.

MARBLED GODWIT was reported in Cumberland County from the boardwalk at Bivalve. Some 30 MARBLED GODWITS were reported from Tuckerton at the end of Seven Bridges Road Oct 2. There may well be a record number of MARBLED GODWITS now present in the state.

Palmyra on Oct 2 had 23 warblers with 4 CONNECTICUTS, up to 3 CLAY-COLORED and 12 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and a robust 27 CONNECTICUT WARBLERS for the season. On Oct. 3, Palmyra had a NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW, and an exotic NUTMEG MANNIKIN!

Overpeck Oct 2-3 had CONNECTICUT WARBLER, CLAY-COLORED and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, DICKCISSEL and seasonal regulars.

Sandy Hook Oct. 2 had at least 113 species including overhead BALD EAGLE, SORA at North Pond, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT near garden and tennis court, DICKCISSEL behind Howard labs, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at Brookdale Maintenance Bldg, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Gunnison sewer works, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES (rare there) at Brookdale and tennis court, AMERICAN PIPITS at Plum Island; and on Oct 3, 2 PINE SISKIN, CASPIAN TERN, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at Parking lot G, and an early HORNED GREBE.

In Great Swamp Oct 3 on Pleasant Plains Road at the Heronry overlook, there were RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, NIGHTHAWK, NASHVILLE WARBLER, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

We have the following requests to report sightings from the Park Superintendent at Island Beach, Cynthia Coritz: it would be great if birders would report their sightings at the Aeolium Nature Center (stafffed daily) or Forked River Interpretive Center (staffed Fri-Sun) within Island Beach State Park. At Barnegat Light State Park, there is a box outside the bath-house across from the Maritime Forest Trail with report sheets for sightings. Also, the park supplies Ocean County bird checklists until the new checklist, Birds of Barnegat Lighthouse SP is available.

The Voice of NJ Audubon is a weekly report on birding in New Jersey. To report, please call 908-766-5787 or fax 908-766-7775.

Effective Nov 1, the address of the NJBRC will change to 142 Moore St., Princeton, 08540.

Good birding and thanks for reporting, calling and surfing.
