Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 10/7/1998
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wed Oct 7 with reports of PURPLE GALLINULE, KING RAIL, HENSLOW'S SPARROW, CLAY- COLORED SPARROWS, BROWN PELICAN, seasonal reports and local reports of interest.

The imm. PURPLE GALLINULE was still present Oct 4 at the entrance pond into Brigantine NWR. Also at Brig, GOLDEN PLOVER, MARBLED GODWIT and BALD EAGLE. At Higbee Beach Oct 3, there were 14 warblers including MOURNING, CONNECTICUT and CHAT, CLAY-COLORED and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. The KING RAIL continues at South Cape May Meadows. A BROWN PELICAN was at Hereford Inlet Oct 4.

A HENSLOW'S SPARROW was reported at Great Swamp on the pleasant Plains Road bend near the BARRED OWL spot Oct 5. At Brightwood Park, sometimes called Taylor Park, in Westfield Oct 3, an ORANGE- CROWNED WARBLER was among the kinglets and other warblers. A BALD EAGLE was at Lake Assunpink Oct 1. Some 50 AMERICAN PIPITSwere at Spruce Run Oct 6. CONNECTICUT and KENTUCKY WARBLERS were on the D&R Canal Towpath in Bound Brook. At Overpeck Oct 4, there were CLAY-COLORED and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, as well as PIPIT and HORNED LARK.

At Sandy Hook Oct 3, CLAY-COLORED and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were in Lot E and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was in the brush by the Lighthouse. Another ORANGE-CROWN was at the rusty Brookdale Barn. Also at the Hook were AMERICAN BITTERN at Plum island, GOLDEN PLOVER on the Spermaceti spit, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO at North Pond, and NASHVILLE WARBLERS at Plum Island and the garden. SAPSUCKERS were in several places and 100's of KINGLETS were seen Oct 3 and 5 on the lawns.

Thompson Park over the weekend had 4 NASHVILLES, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW among other birds.

Chimney Rock from Oct 1 thru 6 had 1100 hawks, including 2 GOLDEN EAGLES, 24 BALD EAGLES, 2500 SNOW GEESE, 19,000 CANADA GEESE, COMMON LOON and RED-HEADED WOODPECKER.
