This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 7, 2010 with reports of CACKLING GOOSE, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, SHORT-EARED OWL, seasonal and local reports of interest.

Sandy Hook had an excellent flight Oct 2 that included 8 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at the end of the fisherman's trail; a late BANK SWALLOW, 2 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, several GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES, 22 species of warblers including a late BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, 2 TENNESSEE WARBLERS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, 2 BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS, 2 CONNECTICUT WARBLERS, and WILSON'S WARBLER; 11 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, flyover DICKCISSEL, and 2 PURPLE FINCHES. A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was found along raccoon alley Oct 3 & 6 and a CONNECTICUT WARBLER was along the path to the locust grove Oct 3. A subadult male COMMON EIDER was found in the ocean off C-lot Oct 3. GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH and DICKCISSEL were noted at the hook Oct 7.

Spruce Run Reservoir sightings included 3 BLACK SCOTERS Oct 5, a HUDSONIAN GODWIT, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, and STILT SANDPIPER at the Mulhockaway Creek mouth Sep 30. Two BONAPARTE'S GULLS, CASPIAN TERN, FORSTER'S TERN, and 2 COMMON TERNS were noted at Spruce Run this week. A belated report was received of 3 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Mulhockaway Creek mouth Sep 26. Also in Hunterdon County at Cold Brook Preserve Oct 6 were VESPER SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS.

Merrill Creek Reservoir/Scott's Mountain Hawk Watch had a GOLDEN EAGLE and LINCOLN'S SPARROW Oct 2. Forty-three BRANT were tallied there Oct 3. Oct 6 brought a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, a juvenile LAUGHING GULL, 6 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 53 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW to the reservoir.

Birds noted at Scherman-Hoffman Sanctuary in Bernardsville Oct 2 included RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 2 MERLINS, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 2 SWAINSON'S THRUSHES, 25 MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, 15 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, and 2 PURPLE FINCHES.

Glenhurst Meadows hosted RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and VESPER SPARROW Oct 6.

An AMERICAN AVOCET was found at the pond behind the interpretive center at Liberty State Park Oct 5-7.

Overpeck Park in Bergen County had 2 MONK PARAKEETS, 13 species of warblers including CAPE MAY WARBLER and WILSON'S WARBLER, and 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS Oct 2. A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and HORNED LARK were there Oct 7-8.

The Allendale Celery Farm hosted PHILADELPHIA VIREO, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and PURPLE FINCH Oct 2.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER highlighted migrants at the State Line Lookout Hawk Watch Oct 2.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen over Mills Reservation from the Montclair Hawk Watch Oct 2.

Kittatinny Valley State Park in Sussex County had a CACKLING GOOSE on White's Pond and along the railroad trail 4 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 10 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, and 150+ RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were noted; all Oct 6.

Two HUDSONIAN GODWITS were noted at Brigantine NWR Oct 2.
