This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday October 9, 2014 with reports of EURASIAN WIGEON, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, WESTERN KINGBIRD, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, seasonal and local reports of interest.

Ocean Terminal in Hudson County continued to host a resident RED-NECKED GREBE this week; other birds noted there included SORA, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, and 8 NELSON'S SPARROWS. A drake EURASIAN WIGEON was found at Stephen R. Gregg Park in Bayonne Oct 6 and at Mill Creek Marsh STILT SANDPIPER and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER were noted Oct 5.

The long-staying AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN continues this week at DeKorte Environment Center in Lyndhurst. Also in Bergen County was a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH at the Celery Farm.

A SUMMER TANAGER was found on the Rutgers Newark Campus Oct 3.

Kittatinny Valley State Park in Sussex County had 2 VESPER SPARROWS Oct 7.

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen at Wildcat Ridge Hawk Watch Oct 5. Also in Morris County was a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at the trap shoot area of Troy Meadows, accessed off Troy Meadows Rd Oct 8.

Chimney Rock tallied an early GOLDEN EAGLE Oct 5. Two Golden Eagles were counted there Oct 8. Also in Somerset County was a CONNECTICUT WARBLER at Glenhurst Meadows Oct 3.

Sandy Hook reports this week included an AMERICAN BITTERN at plum island, up to 4 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at the end of the fisherman's trail, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at the north end of Raccoon Alley Oct 5-6, NELSON'S SPARROW, and a DICKCISSEL Oct 5.

Seven AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were noted at Reed Sod Farm near Allentown Oct 4.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found in Mercer County at Hancock Fields Oct 5.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was found at the end of Reed's Rd at Island Beach State Park Oct 9. Three AMERICAN AVOCETS were noted at the Barnegat Impoundments Oct 7. Great Bay Blvd WMA in Tuckerton had BROWN PELICAN and 8 NELSON'S SPARROWS Oct 4.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found at the Corbin City unit of McNamara WMA southeast of the platform along the dike loop. This would be exceptionally early for a Northern Shrike to appear in NJ; observers should attempt to obtain photos and rule out Loggerhead Shrike.


A birder on a tuna trip out of Point Pleasant to the Hudson Canyon Oct 4 found 4 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 3 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 3 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, and a LEACH'S STORM-PETREL.
