Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 11/13/2008
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday November 13, 2008 with reports of KING EIDER, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, CAVE SWALLOW, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements. Brigantine NWR sightings this week were of an AMERICAN AVOCET and 3 MARBLED GODWITS in the west pool Nov 13 and a NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW that day; Nov 9 birds included ROSS'S GOOSE, TUNDRA SWANS, EURASIAN WIGEON, AMERICAN BITTERN, 9 MARBLED GODWITS, and 2 or 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS in the west pool. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was noted Nov 8.

Two KING EIDERS--a female and immature male, were viewed of the end of Great Bay Blvd near Tuckerton Nov 12.


Island Beach State Park had an AMERICAN AVOCET on the sandbars at the south end of the park and 120 Pine Siskins Nov 9.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was on Wreck Pond Nov 12.

Sandy Hook reports this week were of 15+ CAVE SWALLOWS tallied over north beach pavilion and south pond Nov 9. Also there that day was a DICKCISSEL over G-lot, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and numbers of PINE SISKINS and PURPLE FINCHES. A VESPER SPARROW And YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT were seen Nov 11 and the COMMON MOORHEN continues in north pond through Nov 12. A flock of 80 SNOW BUNTINGS were noted at Gunnison Beach Nov 12 and a late BLUE-HEADED VIREO was near battery potter that day. A COMMON RAVEN was reported over Rte 195 near the intersection with Rte 527 Nov 10.

The CACKLING GOOSE continues in Union County at Rahway River Park through Nov 12. On Nov 8 it was seen one half mile southwest at the Madison Park athletic fields, both times in association with CANADA GOOSE flocks.

Montclair Hawk Watch sightings this week were highlighted by 2 CAVE SWALLOWS, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, and an impressive 890+ PINE SISKINS Nov 9. Another NORTHERN GOSHAWK, VESPER SPARROW, and 548 PINE SISKINS were noted at Montclair Nov 10. A trio of CAVE SWALLOWS passed the watch on Nov 12. Also in Essex County was a DICKCISSEL detected in Roseland at the Becker Tract along Locust Ave Nov 11 and an out-of-place CATTLE EGRET at a marshy area at the end of Commerce Rd in Fairfield Twp Nov 9.

NJ Meadowlands reports this week were of a late STILT SANDPIPER at Mill Creek Marsh Nov 9 and a SHORT-EARED OWL over the old landfill at the entrance to the DeKorte Center the same day.

The Bayonne Golf Club hosted a drake EURASIAN WIGEON and VESPER SPARROW Nov 10. Nearby Liberty State Park had 4 RED-THROATED LOONS, GREAT CORMORANT, and 15 AMERICAN PIPITS this week.

A female WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was found in Ridgewood at the southwest corner of Valleau Cemetery Nov 11.

Glenhurst Meadows in Warren Twp had a COMMON RAVEN Nov 9 and VESPER SPARROW and 100+ PINE SISKINS Nov 10.

Great Swamp NWR had a large flock of approximately 400 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS Nov 12 and a NORTHERN SHRIKE was reported from the heronry overlook along Pleasant Plains Rd the same day.

Round Valley Reservoir hosted RED-THROATED LOON, 54 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 29 PURPLE FINCHES, and 274 PINE SISKINS Nov 10. Nearby Spruce Run Reservoir had 10 BLACK SCOTERS Nov 7 and 212 PINE SISKINS Nov 10. Also in Hunterdon County at Cold Brook Preserve Nov 9 were 40 AMERICAN PIPITS, 3 VESPER SPARROWS, 10 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and FOX SPARROW.

Scott's Mountain Hawkwatch at Merrill Creek Reservoir had 2 GOLDEN EAGLES Nov 9 and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK Nov 7. Two NORTHERN GOSHAWKS were counted Nov 12.

Raccoon Ridge had a NORTHERN GOSHAWK and 3 GOLDEN EAGLES Nov 10. Two NORTHERN GOSHAWKS and 3 GOLDEN EAGLES were tallied there Nov 11.
